Heavy period after surgery?
RNY on 08/14/12
I thought I remembered reading on here that the first period after surgery is heavier than before? This month's visit has been heavier than it has been since getting the Mirena IUD. This is pretty common, right? I'm scheduled to see my doctor tomorrow, so I'll be bringing it up to her. I just wanted to ask on here to see what others' experiences have been. Thanks!

I have been having irregular periods since my surgery. I was always lock clockwork on a 28 day cycle and never more than just moderately heavy bleeding and my period lasting a total of about 5 days.
My first period after my surgery lasted nearly 10 days. Then, I got a few days off and got my next period after only a 19 day cycle. I am still dealing with that one and spotting on day 7.
I am also only 8 months postpartum and breastfeeding twins, so I don't know whether to blame all this on surgery or babies. I wasn't exactly regular yet before my surgery, but my cycles had resumed.
I thought I had also read that cycles can get messed up due to the surgery, calorie restrictions, etc but would love to hear if anyone else has experiences with this. I just wanted to let you know you're not alone!! :)

I am just ending my 3rd cycle in the last month. Yes, you read that right my THIRD! I have had 7 days in the last month without it. I believe it is from the hormones that are stored in our fat. With us losing so fast we are releasing many more hormones than our bodies are used to. I am also using this as my excuse to be cranky!!

wow , i was wondering the same thing . I have mirena as well and before surgery i rarely even had a period and if i did it was just super light and only a couple days. the day of surgery i started one that was pretty heavy, i chalked it up to the blood thinners they were giving me. and then currently experiencing another thats super heavy again. its just really weird. so i feel your pain. i was thinking that i may need to call my doc as well.
I had heavier than normal periods after years of not having a period due to Mirena (I'm on my second one) for the first couple of months after surgery.
Now I have a regular cycle every month. I'm not so crazy about it and hope that in time it goes back to hardly ever.
