OT - got more info about my mammogram
I called today and talked to someone about my mammogram. I was pleasantly surprised that they were willing to answer questions over the phone. I was expecting them to tell me something like "the radiologist wants films" and not want to explain why. In which case I was going to go down there and get a copy of the radiologist's report, but it was nice to get the info over the phone.
There are microcalcifications in the left breast (I googled that - those are small calcium deposits, common as women age, about 50% of all women have them after age 50) which in rare cases indicate cancer or pre-cancerous cells. They compared this mammogram to my last one, which was three years ago, and the calcifications appeared different enough from three years ago that the radiologist wants some magnified images to make sure everything looks OK. Worst case scenario is that it doesn't all look OK and they need to do a biopsy, but in most cases they either decide it looks fine or decide it probably looks fine but they want to check again in six months.
I'm not that worried about it now. I'm still really unhappy that I was notified that there was a problem in a letter, though, and that the letter didn't provide any info except to tell me there was some sort of problem. I think I'm gonna contact the office manager and suggest that in the future, it would really be better to call patients about things like this.

I'm glad you aren't as worried and found out more about your results to set your mind at ease. I hate getting letters like that so you have to wonder what is wrong. It seems like I get letters like that on a Friday afternoon and have to worry about it all weekend before i can call Monday morning! I'm glad you feel better with the results and think its a good idea to call and make suggestions to the doctor's office.
Kelly I was worried about you and kept thinking about you yesterday and hoping to read updates from you yesterday and really was afraid/not comfortable to pry and ask ... I am so glad you got some answers to set your mind more at ease ... ... Keeping you in my thoughts .... best wishes for an optimal resolution to this ...
