We were told not to chew gum. I would call your doc and ask. I don't see why it would be a problem but better safe than sorry right?

You will know if you aren't going to be ok because you will feel bloody awful! There are a lot of scare mongers on here ... If you feel stuck at all (and believe me, you will know - you won't be able to keep water down) - then call your surgeon. If you are eating and drinking ok, chances are the gum went right on through, just as any other food does ...

There's nothing wrong with chewing gum if you can do so without swallowing it (not really a gum person, but haven't swallowed any in 40 years!!!!!****rtainly wouldn't keep tempting fate if you can't chew without swallowing!

I'm going to be the dissenting opinion and say chances are you will be just fine.

ETA: dissenting from the opinion that you should call your doctor, that is.

Drink warm tea, call the doc if you feel anything stuck and maybe call tomorrow when they're open just to be sure. The warm tea will keep it supple and it should go right through your new
"plumbing" .

I still have a hard time understanding how adults accidentally swallow gum, but... The chance of having a problem is VERY small unless you swallowed a huge wad of gum.  The only danger is that it could block your stoma.  If you are drinking water with no problem, you are fine and there is no need to call your surgeon!  Once the gum gets through the stoma, it is no different than if you had swallowed gum before you had your surgery.

You might want to avoid the gum, though, if you are likely to swallow it.  No point in "tempting fate".
