Hard boiled or scrambled eggs are a pretty cheap, calorie dense source of protein - can you tolerate them? If not how about getting some boneless skinless cubed chicken breasts and cooking them in water on the stove and seasoning them with salt and pepper and putting them in single serving containers? I do this and put them in my freezer so I have a ready made source of protein. I look for sales on chicken breast and if I'm lucky I score them for buy 1 get 1 free. Also consider ricotta cheese, greek yogurt, and beans. Best of luck to you! I hope you find what works.
I have never done shakes. I do dense protien. Steak, pork, pot roast, chicken etc. and I work out almost every day. Even of it just a little bit, say 20-30 minutes, but I get my body moving and try to work up a sweat. That's what helped me.

If you can find them, Jack Links Steak Nuggets (I know Rite Aid and Family Dollar have them). They are similar to beef jerky but much more tender and easier to chew. 10 grams of protein per 1 ounce serving. Also eggs with bacon bits. Mix a little unflavored protein mix into sf pudding for a protein pudding snack. Also an ounce of nuts has protein.
