No preop diet- kinda freaked out
RNY on 10/19/12
So the dietician with my new surgeon told me the other day( I've been stewing on posting this) that because of everything I've been through in the past 5 months they feel that I won't have a fatty liver and that there's no need for the two week optifast preop diet.
my first thought was awesome.
second thought was chocolate.
third thought was ****!!!
i have to go away the weekend before my surgery - was booked 9 months ago,so it's taken some stress off there but in the past three days I've eaten CRAP I wouldn't have thought about eating in the past few months.
am I self sabotaging? Last hooraring?losing my **** It's making me fel really really defective.
im thinking when I get back on the Sunday from my weekend away I might hit the protein powders for the 5 day lead up to surgery.maybe.
just needed to have a little raranted use my typos the iPads just gone white screen on me :-)

Hi there,
No real advice, but I'm sorry you are having to deal with so much!!
I start my pre-op diet tomorrow. I'm really nervous about it, well about everything, but it seems like it will be more "real" tomorrow I guess.
If you think doing the protein shakes might help you prepare mentally as well as physically, I say go for it. It can't hurt, right?
I have to go out of town the week before my surgery and I have no idea what I'm going to eat! I guess I can just mix the powder with water...although warm watery protein shake does not sound too appealing. Guess I could bring milk in a cooler. Anyway, I have thought....what if I just eat regular food that day? What will it hurt? I hate the conflict in my head.
Anyway, I really hope things work out for you!!!

My wife starts her one week liquid diet tomorrow. She is so emotional about it. Since I have done it myself I know it's hard but doable.
As to your last hooraring, your human after all. If you KNOW your messing up look at that person in the mirror and have a long talk about what is going on. Don't be afraid to love yourself, you are worth the effort and you are the only person anywhere who is YOU.

Thanks Shelly and Allen
funny how I thought I was dreading the preop until I was told I didn't have it- I think to some extent I was actually looking forward to it -having done it a few times now it was that consistent that happens before you go in!!
Shelly just take a good shaker bottle/cup with you, you'll do great
Allen good luck to your wife I hope she breezes through it!!

The hospital I had both my original WLS and my revision doesn't require a pre op diet and I didn't have any issues either time. I did go crazy the first time. In between getting my date in Aug. and the actual surgery in Oct. I put on at least 10 lbs. I went on an around the world farewell to food tour. I hit every place I could think of that I thought I would miss and the ironic thing is that in the end there wasn't any kind of food that I stayed away from anyway.
With my revision I only had a few days from getting my date and having the surgery and I was so sick at that time that I really didn't go all out. The night before my surgery (my surgeon allowed us to eat normally up until midnight the night before our surgery) I went to a local restaurant and had prime rib with a salad and baked potato. The only thing I ate then that I don't eat now is the roll.
I would trust your doctor and don't worry about it one way or the other. The less pressure you put on yourself the less likely you will be to want to overeat "one last time".

High Weight (2002) 240 Revision Weight (2010) 220 Current Weight 115.
I didn't have a pre-op diet. I don't believe that was detrimental to me in any way. I lost 189 pounds, and have been maintaining 185 pounds of that loss (and am 5 years out).
(I have been having the same "white screen" crap since I upgraded my iPad to iOS6. Drives me insane!)

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Ah little Scarlett, don't stress so much. I know, easier said than done...because truth be told I went ape**** about a week before surgery lol. If you're worried about it, put yourself on your own pre op diet. You could do high protein low carb meals or two protein shakes a day and a high protein meal at night....whatever. Just trust yourself and your doctor....you've been waiting for this for a while.

Ladytazz and lora thank you- knowing you both didn't have the the preop diet is somewhat reassuring!!
Shannon your weightloss is awesome!! I think that the waiting is part of my problem first it was 3 months then it was 6 now it's just over two weeks!!
I think I'm just a bit overwhelmed.

HI, best of luck to you.. I had to be on a 1000 calorie diet for 3 weeks before my gastric bypass. This was so hard for me. I too was conflicted and scared, but I did not go out and eat a whole pizza or tub of ice cream and in the end the surgeon said I was fine. When I think now how I agonized over those thousand calories... I am 12 days out after my surgery and the weight is already starting to come off. I am walking, but wish the pain in my side would let up a bit.. oh well.. I wish you the best of luck! Do NOT waste energy on worry:-)
Laurie :-)
