Hi - I had my RNY on 4/17/12 and I have lost 79 pounds.  On Monday evening I had some chicken and it must have gotten stuck and I threw up.  Tuesday morning I had greek yogurt and when I got to work I threw up again.  I just drank liquids after that and on Tuesday evening I felt alot better but I didn't eat but just drank liquids.  Got up Wednesday morning and ate greek yogurt for breakfast, lunch I had cheese.  I tried to take it easy on my stomach and drank mostly liquids.  Wednesday evening for dinner I decided to continue to take it easy and had greek yogurt, well later on I just threw up until I didn't have anything left.  This morning I have just had popsicles and powerade zero.  The only thing that has changed for me is that my doctor put me back on Metformin for my diabetes so he can eventually take me off insulin.  I started taking on Monday.  I don't know if this is the problem, they are huge pills and I took them whole.  Can pills get stuck?  I don't know what is going on!  Any advice or suggestions?  Any help is truly appreciated!   - debbie

For sure! Metformin are huge. I am off them but still have problems with the large vitamin pills I have to take I always get upset stomach for awhile after taking them. I had to stop taking the antiox totaly because they made me sick. Good luck sweetie hope things improve for you. Maybe you could crush them and mix in a shake or something. Melyssa

Thanks so much for your concern.  I am not taking my Metformin today to see if that is what is bothering my stomach.     debbie

Hi  I think that because we eat so little meds sometimes dont sit well on the stomach. I think that your new medication might be making you sick . I know anytime I take even Tylenol it makes me fill like I want to throw up. I hope you feel better.

My generic Metformin pills are about 1/3 the size of my vitamins (the smallest pill I take) There is no reason you can't cut them with a pill cutter. I have never had any problems taking them, but I ALWAYS take them with food.

Stomach upsets are very common with Metformin and I absolutely wouldn't take them on an empty stomach ...

Thanks so much for the advice.  My Metformin look like horse pills and I took them whole.  I just got off the phone with my surgeon's office.  They believe since this happened on the 1st day I started taking Metformin that it probably got stuck.  And now I have just irritated my pouch by throwing up since then and that is why nothing is staying down.  She told me to just stay off Metformin for today and just drink and eat soft foods.  I hope this works.    debbie

One of the main reasons I decided to have RNY was to get my diabetes under better control or gone forever! I would rather take insulin than put Metformin in my mouth, I had no quality of life on any form of Metformin(There are a lot of different names, but it is all metformin in the long run) The stomach issues and especially the nausea and diarrhea kept me a prisoner in my own home. My case is probably more severe than what you have, but I would definitely speak with your endocrinologist and see if insulin is the better way to go until things improve. Also, my surgeon tells me that I can always go back to liquids, etc. with eating different foods if they bother me, just don't start eating things before he tells me to start them. Only 4 weeks out, have battled diarrhea, not vomiting. But have had to put full foods on hold at different times. Good luck and be well.
