Anyone take these post-RNY? I'm thinking might be a good idea to add to my plethora of suppliments.... knees are DYING after the 8 mile run yesterday! Any recommendation of brands would be welcome!

Both my PCP and surgeon said to NOT take it. They said (just the messenger here) that it isn't proven to help joint function and has been tied to GI bleeding.

Are you an overpronator? That can lead to wicked post-run knee pain.

I did not take them for a while.
I had taken them for years before...although I'm not certain of the efficacy of the meds.
At my post-surgery time, the concern seemed to be the difficulty of digesting large pills.
I waited some weeks.  Then I tried them without problems, so I have continued...now 3 months after surgery.

Surprisingly I don't overpronate. When I got fitted for my shoes, I actually have really good natural form. Just concerned about the health of my knees long-term, after 30+ years of obesity, I'm hoping they last for the long haul b/c I plan on doing marathons in the future!

I took them in pill form (several different brands, some quite pricey) for over a year before my RNY because of the arthritis in my knees, and it did not seem to help even the right knee which is least damaged.  I started drinkng the Elations brand drink powder about 9 months (?) ago, though, and it really does seem to have helped the stiffness and pain in my right knee.  It has not done a damn thing for the left knee which is severe and needs replaced, but it has helped the other one enough that I am willing to continue to buy it.  They advertise that you can feel better in 6 days and, although I am usually VERY skeptical of things, I really did notice a difference in a little over a week. A friend who plays tennis recommended it and she also noticed a difference quickly.

Thanks Lora! I'll look into Elations, of course will be clearing the idea by my surgeon first.

I've not taken either of these, but I did consider it. My research indicates that the liquid form is better absorbed, even by 'normies', so I'm guessing that would be the better choice for post-ops.

Also, my brother was giving it to his eldrly dog, and it really seemed to improve the dog's walking. I think this is a pretty reliable indicator that it works, at least for dogs---there's no placebo effect in dogs,  since they don't know it's supposed to make them feel better. (*grin*)
