I've never had a problem with salad staying in my pouch. Salad is a slider food, it leaves the pouch fairly quickly. Just eat the salad don't drink and eat your steak. It will be OK.

I am 7+ years out and have drank with meals as needed since I was allowed to eat regular food.  Drinking a little does not empty the pouch and wash anything away, so don't believe that.  I still cannot eat an entire regular hamburger with bun.  I thought the no drinking with meals was stupid when I first heard it and I still do, I have never been more then ten pounds from my goal weight and currently weigh 139 at 5'5.

Thanks Heidi - I was hoping you would pipe in because I thought it was you who had not had problems with the drinking during meals thing.  And I knew you had had long term success=)

I'm sure Heidi won't mind me pointing out, because she is always very honest, but she does not live with a conventional diet.   I doubt very many of us would be able to sustain our health on her regime.   She is very focussed but is perhaps not the best example of how to live a healthy RNY lifestyle for life.

Kudos to her for doing it her way, but I certainly wouldn't recommend it as a long term possibility for the majority of us!

Always good to get a completely different perspective though broken heart

Agreed.  About the conventional diet part.

I was looking at it within the context of drinking while eating.  Thanks for pointing out the bigger picture.

Everyone has their own path, and I just admire anyone who makes it long term.  Those have learned over time that what works for them, even though it may not work for  others,  impress me.

The reality is there is a threshold of calories/activity where you can maintain or lose, you need to find the magic number and then find how you can make that number work for you.  Not fighting everything your body wants is key to success.  I like to eat in bed, to do it meant sacrifice, but it is worth it to me.  Not every minute of every day needs to be celebrated, I don't need a cookie every time I do something right, so going without so I can do something I like at night is worth it.  You need to evaluate your situation and figure it out.  It took me forever but I got there and it has proven successful and I never feel like it is a sacrifice anymore.

I chose to stop fighting my body and work with what it naturally wanted me to do which was to eat while lying in bed at night.  To allow that I had to give up something, which for me was eating during the day while I work.  I drink tea with lemon.  I never get hungry.  If I eat or don't eat I feel no difference, unless I eat something too carby and then it is the RH rollercoaster.  I start eating with dinner, followed by a protein rich dessert/snack and then when I go to bed I eat nuts, or a protein bar, or whatever I feel like having.  I drink when I eat no matter what it is, not gallons but normal sips.  I have no issues with my teeth other then some enamel wearing away because I love lemons but other then that I haven't had one tooth break, chip, crack etc in 7+ years.  I truly believe the no drinking while eating is a huge myth and has caused more problems then it solved.  But everyone here needs to decide what to believe and do for themselves.  Just because I can do something doesn't mean its right for everyone.  I only follow what works for me after years of experimenting, its taken a long time to come to the realization I am totally in control of my weight and my eating and I choose what I weigh.  It can be done if you want it bad enough.
