Hugs... I am sorry that I just now saw this. Have not been here much the past few days.

My experience as a counselor has been the same. MANY clients have complained of poor treatment by ER staff for various reasons (even medical emergencies like kidney stones and appendicitis) once they discovered the person had any kind of mental health issue.

It is appalling!

Kelly,

Some attendings won't bother going with Lidocaine if it's just a few staples on the theory that the shot will hurt just as much as the staples.

Ditto some attendings with many staples over a larger area, as it would take many painful shots.

Also, used to have an attending who claimed he would never use Lidocaine on a scalp wound.  I think that's an old school thing.

Also also, if you are self-anesthetized (IE, drunk or high), most docs won't bother numbing you first.

I am not going to say that any of the above is right or fair.  I am just giving you an objective answer based on my experience working in an ER.

I agree with the first sentence. I needed stitches last month because I accidently cut the living hell out of my finger with a kitchen knife and the doc said they COULD give me a shot, but it would hurt worse than the stitches given the size and location of the wound. So I just did it without it. I have a whole new finger print now.  mail

Never worked in ER...mostly geriatrics, so I'm not much help with your question.  I will, however, keep you in my prayers and send good thoughts your way :)

My apologies as a nurse who has worked in many ER's.  unfortunately when you see stuff all the time you become callus, especially when injuries are self inflicted.  I am not making excuses for them because nurses are suppose to be advocates for the patient.  I will keep you in my prayers.

In my prayers. You ate a blessing to us all on the forum. We need you. Remember that now is not forever and that with time comes new perspective.

Kelly,

I am thinking of you, have been wondering where you were.  I have also experienced stigma from all sides (as a patient and professional).  I actually co-authored a paper on differences in ER treatment based on patient's mental health history (guess what we found?)  I am also sorry.  Take care of yourself.
