Is there such a thing as too little cals?
I will be two months post up on the 12th and have lost 41 pounds. But I don't think I even get 500 cals in a day bc for some reason I can only eat a 1/8cup at a time(not complaning), anymore I get sick. And protein shakes I can drink about 4 ozs at a time (yse ti be able to drink the whole 8 to 12 ozs) anymore and they come back up. So i am having troubles with protein bc of this, i get most of mine from milk. I'm thinking about adding the whey protein shoots to help me. Do you guys think this is a problem? I see the doc on the 10th for my checkup.
Don't quote me on this, but I remember my surgeon and/or nut saying that 600 calories per day is the minimum. However, everyone's surgeon/nut is different. Your body needs calories just to function. I've heard that some people lose less if they aren't getting enough calories.
Please check with your surgeon/nut.
Are you tracking what your eating? Some surgeons don't push counting calories..I looked back through my logs and it looks like I was getting upto about 600 calories until I was 4-5 months out. I was getting most of my protein from tuna, shakes, and egg whites. For what its worth in my first two months I lost 40lbs.
I don't track what I eat, but the amount of protein and liquids I get. That's what my nut and doc wanted me to count. It seems like my stomcach is getting smaller as time goes on bc I can eat less and less. I'm 9 days shy of 2 months and down 40.8. I can't do eggs, they make me sick now, and I hate any form of fish yuck lol. So i try milk, chesse and protein shakes. i just now can eat meat without mixing it with mashted poatoes.
Do NOT buy protein shots unless the ingredients say they are 100% WHEY protein (no matter what the rest of the label says)! The ones with the collagen protein cannot be absorbed, so are completely useless.
Yes, you definitely CAN get too few calories. If your caloric level stays too low, your body drops your metabolism in order to get as much use as it can out of the calories you DO take in. That slows the weight loss. If your caloric intake stays too low too long, you can cause your body to permanently drop the metabolism which will make it harder not only to lose weight right now but will make it harder to maintain your weight loss once your body overcomes the caloric malabsorption. (Some people have this happen after RNY even if their body doesnt go into full blown "starvation mode".) So it is important to get enough calories in.

You might try adding just a LITTLE protein powder to some SF pudding, and that will give you some extra protein and calories. My best suggestion, if you are having trouble getting in enough solid food would be to add back in puréed, slider types of foods that have protein. Cottage or ricotta cheese, FF refried beans with a little shredded cheese, SF pudding or cream soups with some protein powder added (even just an eighth of a scoop of unflavored so it doesn't change the texture or taste). You can also drink milk to get additional protein and calories (assuming that you are not lactose intolerant).

Thanks for the ideas. I went back to adding more protein shakes into my day to get more protein in. I drink the heck out of milk lol. I know most of my cals come from there even though its skim. On a normal day, I drink 3 of 4 cups of milk, eat cheese, peanuts, protein shakes, and sometimes meat (chicken, ham, beef)
try logging your foods on a site like myfitnesspal you can mointor your protein and water there as well. You will see a trend in your calories and you'll also see what you are eating that has a few more in.
At 3 mo out I talked to my doc cuz I was barely getting in 500 a day and he wanted me to shoot for 800. Most days now I still only get in 800 I too have a tiny pouch it seems. My doc told me to add an extra shake in the evening to try to up them if I need to.
Thanks! I'm glad I'm not the only one who seems to have a tiny pouch lol. I went from getting a whole large pizza to getting maybe a whole cheese stick. ha. I will look into the fitnesspal, it sounds like a good idea and a lot less paper to write on( i write mine on a paper at home)
