How much causes dumping? Ate Butter Kuchen tonight, but still unsure if I dump...

Tonight, we gathered at my niece's house for our last Christmas get together for family...finally!  My oldest sister brought a Butter Kuchen, which is one of my favorite, favorite desserts and was just impossible to not eat.  I reasoned, in my mind, that if I did dump...it would be worth it.  Actually, it went beyond my mind and came out of my mouth! Crazy, huh?  I've pretty much followed the rules for the last few months and tonight, I caved in :(
Anyway, I had about 2 tablespoons of this wonderful, buttery, sweet delight and felt a tiny bit nauseous, but not anything like "dumping" symptoms that I've heard about.  What I wonder is, did I not eat enough to know for sure?  Or am I not a dumper?  Either way, I'm not thrilled that I was tempted and gave in.  I am, however, pleased that I was satisfied with such a small amount.
I kinda hoped that I did dump, so that I wouldn't touch things like this.

Everyone's different and chances are you may not dump given its supposedly only 30% that do.

i dump if I hit 8g of sugar, not inlcluding lactose and I think I'm ok with fructose but so far have only tried berries anda very small amount of mango, any amount of sugar alcohols also makes me dump-malitol being the worst.

Early out, I had yogurt with 19g of sugar...didn't even think about the sugar in it. I did not have any problems with it...does this mean I'm less likely to dump?

Don't know, you can't tell how much of that 19g comes from lactose or from added sugar or from fructose if there is fruit in it- I found out by mistake I can eat yogurt with at least 15g of sugar but I'm guessing its the sugars I don't react to,it was a yogurt with berries in it- it's probably easier to "assume" you dump and avoid refined sugars than to find out you don't!

Even if you are one of the minority 30% who dump, 2Tb of the kuchen probably did not have enough sugar in it to make you dump unless you are someone who is very sensitive to sugar.  I have never made a butter kuchen, but I have a recipe for blueberry kuchen, and it only calls for 3/4C of sugar for the whole thing.  So my vote is that you still have no idea whether or not you dump.

Finding out is a double edged sword.  Yes, if you find that you DO dump, it might (or might not, actually) help you avoid sweets, but you are twice as likely to find that you DON'T dump, which then will probably make you much more likely to eat sweets than if you still didn't know whether or not you dump. So, in many cases, not knowing for sure whether or to you dump, but being afraid that it WILL happen, is more likely to keep you away from the sweets.

Lora,
Yes, that's what I was hoping would keep me from trying sweets...the fear of dumping.  The Butter Kuchen is FILLED with sugar.  There's probably 3/4 cup of sugar as the crunchy top. It's kind of like a chess pie, more runny filling of butter and sugar. I really didn't eat much, but the thought of NOT dumping scares me more than the thought of dumping. I'm not a huge sweet fan, but there are some things that I MUST steer clear of, or I will overeat.  Maybe? I don't know that I've truly been this determined to make positive changes in my life.
Good thing I have a lifetime of counseling, NUT and group with my Bariatric Center!  I'm going to need it!  Oh and OH :)
On a sad note, my oldest sister who brought the desserts, has recently been started on large amounts of insulin twice a day.  It was so hard to hear her talk about it, knowing that I have just recently been taken off of ALL my diabetic medicines and my blood sugars are running normal.  It breaks my heart to know that both of my sister's are not making any changes to better their lives.
My other sister refused to come to the gathering, telling our oldest sister that she had gained so much weight and didn't want to have to face me!  She said that seeing me thinner, hearing me talk about what I can and can't eat (which I make a conscious effort to NOT do but am always asked), and to have me give her "fat clothes" and having them fit her was too much for her to deal with.  So, this is the first Christmas that our entire family didn't get together.  She asked for clothes, by the way.  When I first had surgery, she called to put in bids for the first pick before my other sister had a chance to go through them.  Crazy!

I once had an apple kuchen that was clearly very high in sugar, so I know they vary a lot.  I was just not familiar with the butter ones.

Yes, unfortunately, women can be very weird, and it can significantly change relationships, when one member f the "group" loses (or gains) a large amount of weight. My SIL and one of her cousins have has weight problems (although o where close to the extent of me being SMO), but when I was about a year out (so still and about 35 pounds to lose), and the three of us were together, my SIL's cousin complimented me on how I looked but then commented on how depressed that made her because now SHE was the fat one in the group.  My contact with her has been very limited since then.

Sugar is by far one of my downfalls.  Let me tell you - you'll know if your dumping. I've had a mild case of it and it was AWFUL.  But i do know if I have processed sugar like cookies, cake, cupcakes then I get a pretty bad stomach ache for about 30 min.  Try not to tempt fate to much...but we are adults and eventually your going to try something.  One thing we have to teach ourselves is moderation. Which is tougher then it seems. lol
