Have an appt with my PCP on Monday morning. I'm going to request a referral to a bariatric surgeon...I don't know why I'm so apprehensive about this. I love my doctor but I have this feeling that he will say what my family and friends have said to me..Your not heavy enough to have surgery..

YES I AM!! I want to scream that!!

Anyway, if you all have any ideas on the best way to approach my PCP I am all ears..and any good thoughts/ prayers are welcome!!

You are the exact same weight that I was prior to surgery and my PCP (who is a real A$$) had no problem giving me the referral.  I told him I was interested in looking at the option of surgery and he jumped on it.

Yes, I have already decided that if he says no I will change. I'm just crossing my fingers and toes that he agrees.. I mean it's not the surgery he is requesting, just the consult for the surgeon..I will cry if I have to!

My PCP is against me having the surgery. He's been my doctor my entire adult life. His reasons weren't valid especially since he suggested it a couple years ago. I used some advice that he had given me about how to handle another one of my doctors. At the end of my visit, even though he didn't agree he agreed to help me out in any way that he could. I didn't need his approval, but I did want his support!! If he wasn't willing I would have found me a new doctor after 22yrs!! Good Luck!!

I would hope that your PCP will be supportive of your request, esp after taking into consideration your struggle with weight. I never even thought about the possibility of my PCP not being supportive, but then again he has been my PCP for 30 years and hs seen my struggle as well as my co morbidities increase and my health start to decline.

hope all went well and you were give your referral, but if not-don't let that stop you from getting your referral. Keep us posted & good luck!!

That's what my PCP said and I weigh the same as you AND I'm diabetic. I reminded him I could drop dead of a heart attack tomorrow trying to lose 100 lbs or he could allow me the tools I need to live my life as a healthy individual. He didn't argue the point and filled out the referral papers as I waited in his office.

Does your insurance require a formal "referral"?  Thankfully mine does not, so I can see any type of specialist I need.

Check your insurance first, and then if your pcp won't do a referral - find another pcp.

Good luck!

Yes, I have tricare and any specialist visits have to go through your PCM (PCP). I have been with him for 5 years so he has seen my for knee pain, foot pain, back pain, headaches, hypothyroidism and PCOS. I was apprehensive about talking to my husband about it as well...hopefully it's just my own feelings and I get the referral Monday!

Thanks for all your support!

I was surprised that all of my doctors were in favor of this. I thought that my osteopath (who I see for hip problems) would be against it, since he is very into natural cures, but he was incredibly supportive. Same with my GI specialist -- I thought she would say "no" given that I have some GI issues. Every single specialist was supportive. I think doctors realize that obesity is a medical issue that deserves a medical solution. As other people have said, change PCPs if yours is not supportive.

Good luck!
