New ops-how many grams of protein are you getting in each day?

HI there-

My surgery was a week ago.   My dr. recommends 60-80 grams of protein and 48 ozs. of fluids. I am able to get the fluids in just fine (usually about 55 ozs) but I can barely get the 60 grams of protein in-much less more than that.

How many grams of protein are you getting in each day? I just hope it's okay that I'm eating on the lower end of the range that he gave me.

Thank you in advance!

Pam

At one week out the majority aren't close to getting in enough water and protein both.  It's most important to stay hydrated and keep working to increase your protein.  Don't stress about getting 60+ grams in this short time, you've had major surgery and you're healing right now.

Sometimes too much emphasis is put on getting in a certain grams of protein so early out WHEN drinking liquids to stay hydrated and healing should be first.  Your body has protein stores (for lack of a better term) that will get you through a short period of time.

Congrats on your surgery.

Sorry I didn't answer your questions....it's been so long ago I don't know how many grams I was getting and my surgeon never gave me a # of grams but to follow his plan and I'd lose the weight.  I did add protein shakes after a few months because of limited pouch capacity I was barely eating anything.

I had my surgery 2 wks ago and they told me to focus on fluids first and foremost. Just said to do the best I could with protein. Said it was not most important right now. Hydration was.

I really think that surgeons set a lot of people up for perceived failure with these numbers.    Very few obese people are truly malnourished and so there is no reason why you can't live on your protein stores for a month or three!!!!

30g at 30 days, 60g at 60 days and 90g at 90 days is perfectly acceptable for us in health terms and if you can do more than that - good for you.

I haven't heard of anyone going to the ER for protein deficiency in the first year, but we read OFTEN of people going to be rehydrated by IV or suffering extreme nausea because they aren't getting their fluids in.   Clear liquids are way easier to get in and are way more important in the early days ...

I am 10 days post-op, and I am LUCKY if I can get in 20 grams. Getting that amount in is force-feeding in itself. I agree that even giving us 60 grams to shoot for is being unreasonable at this time. Sounds like you are doing great!

My surgeon said not to worry about protein or calories right now. To focus in water.
I'm getting about 30 gr protein and 350 to 450 calories. I'm able to drink more each day.

I echo what Sin Kim stated. I was putting so much pressure on myself to get my protein in, I literally made myself sick, ended up rushed in for a contrast (YUCKO) all because I was trying to hit that magic number! Finally my surgeon told me, in all his years, he has NEVER had one patient that ended up with protein deficiency. He also told me that the 60 g number was a goal to reach, not that I should or even could hit it so early out!
Please don't stress about the protein, it will come naturally once we are eating "regular" diets. Focus on the water and vitamins.
Good luck to you!

Thanks Jenn!! Your surgeon's comment about not seeing a protein deficiency eases my mind!!
