Does anyone use REAL sugar in their coffee?

I like my coffee just a little sweet (about a tsp of sugar) and I just don't like any artificial sweeteners.  Is it crazy to think of using real sugar in my coffee?  My dr's plan says to keep everything under 5 g. of sugar.  I know I am early out so I'm not talking about doing it now-just sometime in the future.

Just wondering if anyone else uses real sugar. I have given up Cokes and I know that I need to definitely stay away from them since they are loaded with sugar. Just wondering if a tsp. of sugar with my morning coffee would be such a bad thing.

Thanks for your feedback!

I usually drink my coffee black, but if I decide I want it a little sweetened or a little creamer I use a bit of vanilla or any other flavor protein powder.  Gives it a little sweetness and a few grams of protein to help me reach my daily goal.  I don't dump so I could use real sugar, it just seems like a waste to me to take in the empty calories when I could use them for something else.

When the time comes that you want to drink coffee, it's a decision you'll have to make as to what's best for you.   you could also talk to the NUT at your surgeons office for an opinion.

Thank you, Justin! I need to try truvia.  Does it leave an aftertaste?

I havent noticed one. Be careful its really sweet. I think its like 2/3 tsp = 2 tsp... i use it in everything that calls for sugar or sweetner.

I don't drink my coffee sweet, but I think your answer will depend on a couple things. How many cups of coffee do you plan on drinking a day with a tsp of sugar? Just one or 6? 6 would add up to 2 tbsp of sugar per day. Just something to keep in mind. Another question will be to see how your body reacts to a tsp of sugar. It would affect some, others not a all.
Another person commented to try stevia. Truvia is one brand cut with erythritol (sp?) that's not bad. I use NuNaturals brand in my lemon water. No bitter aftertaste.
Hope you get to enjoy your coffee no matter how you decide to drink it!!

Thank you, Blondie! I have 1 cup in the morning and occasionally one in the evening when I get home from work. But usually one cup per day is all I need! I will try Truvia.

Pre op I loved my coffee with tons of sugar flavoring plus sugar. Now post op, I am VSG 3 months out, I was so afraid to have coffee, I dont know why. I tried a small with flav from DD. It was bland to me. I was told that I should only have Truvia. It's not THAT bad. If you get a decaf flav coffee, and bring your own Truvia, it isnt horrible. Also, I have heard about these SF flavorings, Toroni or something. I bought a small one of Carmel. I have yet to try it. Even though its SF it might be a tad sweet and you can add truvia also.

I use creamer in my coffee, but I am also a year postop. I would recommend International Delight SUGAR FREE creamer (French Vanilla or Hazelnut flazors are available). You can get the same taste without all the unnecessary sugar and calories.
