OT Dog LOVES protein supplements! smh

After going to the gym, having my blood sugar drop midway through, I am in the habit of carrying protein bars, water, and a little baby formula container with powdered milk and protein powder in my gym bag.  Our oldest dog will eat anything that slightly resembles food, so we have to keep everything out of her reach.  She's a short, squatty dog, so usually it's not so difficult.
This morning, my daughter  moved my gym bag from the top of the washing machine to the floor, forgetting to put it back up.  I found wrappers and pieces of plastic bags, along with the chewed up formula container, on the living room floor.  The dog, Halo, ate 3 or 4 Quest bars, half of some other protein bar that my daughter bought (can't recall the name), another strawberry cheesecake protein bar that I got from my Weight Management Center, 3-4 chicken bouillion cubes, a nearly new package of sugar free gum, and she was just getting ready to chew open a package of Hall's cough drops when I discovered her mess!
Needless to say, she didn't eat any of her dog food today.  I am wondering if she is going to be constipated from all the protein?
Instead of her health being my first thought, it was how expensive those bars were!  :)
Our other dog is so good about not getting into things, but is a barker.  Barks at the slightest sound.  Gotta love 'em!

I would keep a close eye on the dog for a couple of days and get in to the vet if the dog starts acting strangely or becomes ill. There are a LOT of chemicals in protein bars and there is no telling how so much of them might affect the dog (plus the gum).

there was just a link in facebook that xylitol in some sugar free gum can cause dogs to have dangerously low blood sugar. which can be fatal.  my dog is diabetic so I look at things like this. hopefully all of the other food she ate will keep that from happening but if possible, I would have her around someone today

If the sugar free gum has Xylitol I would call the vet, it can raise a dogs blood sugar dangerously high and cause the dogs pancreas to over produce insulin so it crashes back down, and can result in death, it is very bad for dogs. For a 10 lb dog a 1/2 a stick of gum can be fatal.

Good Luck!

Aside from the crap that's in those protein bars (and people still eat them) those bouillon cubes are not good either - sooooo much sodium.    I know a very small part of a cube is enough to kill a mouse (don't ask) - I do think a vet visit is on the cards - and you thought the loss of the protein bars was expensive

I've been watching her since she got into the bag and ate everything.  She didn't eat anything yesterday, but drank water like mad.  I'm guessing the sodium?  Maybe from the chemicals?  I did call the emergency animal hospital and they pretty much told me to do what I was doing...monitor and bring her in if she acted differently.  Other than not eating yesterday, she has been fine.  Today, she ate her food, and has been going potty without any noted problems.
This dog has been eating strange things for years.  She ate a plastic frisbee one time and had to be taken to the vet because the hard plastic wasn't so fun coming out...it made her bleed a bit.  She has eaten gum NUMEROUS times...sugar free and regular.  My daughter and her friends just can't keep their purses and backpacks out of her reach.
One Christmas, she got a huge box of chocolate covered cherries.  That was horrible!  I had to give her hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting.
We have been pretty regular callers to the emergency animal hospital, our regular vet, and the poison control center because of this dog.  She's a tough one!
Thanks all for the concerns and suggestions :)

I read my initial post again, and I feel awful. When I said that my first thought was about the cost of the bars instead of her health, I think I was reacting out of frustration. I love our dogs very much.  They are such a huge part of our family. I don't know what I'd do if something serious were to happen to either one of them.
