I'm almost 4 years out and decided I'd better get my bones checked-I'm happy to report I got an excellent report! Oh and I'm 5'4" and thought I was 5'5"......which means I'm in an even worse part of that damn BMI scale! Oh well, it is what it is!

Kim, I also lost an inch in height somewhere along the way... I went from just under 5'4" to 5'3"!  Glad your bones are good.  I am going to schedule my follow up scan (had one 2 years ago) here in a few weeks.

I got an  "excellent" report too last year - all that extra weight years ago and now all that calcium IS doing some good!

Congrats on the excellent report! x

What age do they recommend the first bone density scan?  I'm 54 and just entering menopause, so I'm thinking it's probably time for a baseline, right?

I'd definitely recommend one now.  I had my first one at 44 (2 years post-op) and it's been good so far.  My PCP recommends every 2 years currently until/unless deterioration is noted.  I'm now menopausal (hysterectomy induced) and go in July....crossing fingers with the changes to my body I get another good review.

Most insurance companies pay for a baseline at 50 and then every two years after.   RNY and a referral will allow one to be done before that.

You certainly should get a baseline now - I scheduled mine at the same time and in the same facility as my mammogram.
