Does anyone ever forget they had WLS?
I have done this a few times now. Yesterday i got a tall iced passion tea unsweetened. They always give you a straw with your drink.. this is the THIRD time i have accidentally sipped my 1st sip with a straw and i quickly remember and get mad at myself especially when the gas bubbles come shortly afterwards. My program doesn't want us using straws i know some programs are ok with it though.. It's still hard 6 weeks out remember and adjusting to the fact i had my insides rearranged.
Do you ever slip up or reach for that drink while eating and totally forget for a minute?
Yes, early out I would forget about not drinking with meals, so I just stopped having any water on the table. Other than that, though, I didn't forget that I had surgery (and that wasn't really forgetting the surgery, it was just a 40+ year habit of drinking with meals that was hard to break).

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Yes it is hard! I've had several people remind me i can't drink when i accidentally reach for my water after taking a bite.. it's a habit i never worked on pre-op and i should have. I mean i am getting better about it now drinking while eating anyway i never have.. but the straw thing i forget quickly. I also keep dishing myself out MORE FOOD then i know i can eat.. habit i guess? Like today did 1/2 cup i very rarely can eat 1/2 cup at 6 weeks out.. i am lucky i can eat 1/4 cup then i have a whole bunch of food i have to throw away. Stuff i have to work on. Sometimes i still act as if i never had surgery with my actions.
YES!! Probably once a week. :) The first time was the worst. My son had a chicken sandwich and had a piece left, he was going to toss it. So like prior to wls I took a big bite chewed and swallowed. OMGosh, the pain was horrible! Now it's mostly either taking too big of a bite or drinking while eating.
This reminds me of strange dreams I have, where I am stuffing huge bites of food in my mouth and in my dream thinking, omg, stop! You can't eat like this! And I'll think I can't believe I'm not getting sick from eating so much! Lol

Our surgeon has no issue with you using a straw. Drinking with your meal wont hurt you except that you might get a little uncomfortable. Chances are the only draw back is if you drink with your meal you will be able to eat much more food thus making the effects of the surgery moot.
So if you really want the surgery to have it's full benefit, follow orders and stay away from drinks. Order a water so the waiter will leave you alone and don't beat yourself up if you have a sip of water with your meal. It's not the end of the world.
At 4.5 years out, I often "forget" about my weight loss surgery. I can pretty much eat whatever I want to. I think my eating habits are similar to other people my size who have not had weight loss surgery. RNY does not define me anymore.
