WLS surgery patients blasted on the Radio this AM

The morning show I listen to on the way to work was talking about Chris Christy and his WLS back in February.  The shows hosts all blasted how there was no point it never works and everyone who has surgery always gains the weight back.  Its not that I haven't heard all this before but its amazing how only the negative ever gets talked about.  I know to just blow it off and make sure I am prepared to use my tool as its meant to be used and that I will have to make lifestyle changes.  It just really made a bad start to my day.  I am pre-op scheduled for June 4th.

They sound like they had a bunch of hot air that they needed to let out!!! I've heard it all before too. Most people want to see others fail and it is very disturbing if you ask me.

Ignore. They are paid to froth people up, not report the facts. That's what NPR is for, right? Lol
We know the truth. Let them flaunt their ignorance.
Somehow I missed that Chris Christy had wls.

Its just plain ignorance. I bet they did not do any research on the topic. They just repeated what some other ignorant person said about wls. Just ignore it. You, like me and everyone else here, will be dealing with stupid, negative, and ill-informed comments and questions for the rest of our postop lives. Its a part of life.

What is really unfortunate is with the governors' choice of surgery, the lap band, his chances of success are the lowest of all the available WLS out there.  Why he choose that I don't know.  I am sure he fell for the "least evasive" fallacy but unless he is one of the small minority of successful band patients he most likely will not do very well.  I am glad at least he decided to look to medicine to help him manage his weight and I hope he has great success.

Gov Christie has access to gold standard insurance and doctors and he chose Lap Band????   A SMO man has no business getting a Lap Band with everything we know now and his surgeon/adviser has a lot to answer for!

I'm afraid his decision to have a Lap Band shows poor research and poor decision making - he only had to come here to find out what a DREADFUL surgery he has chosen ...

I wish him well but I see a revision in his future!   Many decisions that he gets to make don't get a second chance.   If there is continued honesty about his future health, I feel that he will just confirm all the WLS failure rubbish we hear!

I too wondered why he chose Lap band.  The only reason I could come up with is that with his schedule he needed something less invasive than the other WLS.  How does recovery time compare with lap band?  I heard he did it out patient.  I am sure he didn't have time to take several weeks off to recover and deal with possible complications.  I am really happy he had the surgery, but I too fear he will be unsuccessful.

I agree!  I am ASTOUNDED that he made that choice, and that his surgeon LET him.

One of the reasons I have been open about my WLS is so people have knowledge before they put their foot in their mouths by bad talking the surgery.  Even then, some will still tell horror stories that have happened or spin tales of weight gained back.  I still smile at those folks and just say that the good lord willing and if I can keep up the hard work I'll be able to live a better life like the hundreds of thousands of patients that WLS has worked long term for.

Everyone seems to "have a friend" who had WLS and failed miserably. Notice how very few of those individuals can give a concrete, verifiable response about anything beyond that. I can't tell you the number of people who are shocked when I say that I'm 9 years post-op. The initial reaction is almost always something like "Really? I heard those surgeries never work" or "Really? You look so normal."

I try to educate others around me, but it gets tiresome to be told inaccurate information by a source who has never experienced or researched the process. You'll find that you have to develop a bit of a thick skin, because people will say things like this to you post-op (I know, how nice of them). I whip out before and after pictures not to brag, but to prove that it DOES work.

Rest assured that as long as you follow your surgeon's plan, you'll do just fine. And chances are that someone those announcers care about or know has had WLS, and maybe that person will give one of them a piece of his / her mind.
