Rny or ds what is the difference ?
My surgeon did and my own research. When I had mine done there weren't as many options as there are now. I couldn't get the band as I had acid reflux and it would have made it worse, RNY was done where I lived and my surgeon was one of the best at that, I would have had to go elsewhere for DS but know now that each type of surgery has it's own plusses and minuses. Research it yourself, talk to others on each board about their experiences, read up on both procedures and join a support group so you can hear actual stories from those that have had it done. I had RNY almost 12 yrs ago and I still have wow moments, still eat "normally" and would do it over again every single year to feel this good. No complications and my weight is where I want it to be.

DS is a bypass and a sleeved stomach.. whereas the RNY is a bypass and a new pouch/ smaller stomach is made from the least stretchy part of your old stomach... you can google these as well and see the differences between the two longterm. I personally LOVE MY RNY and wouldn't change it if i could. Also DS is usually recommended for people with high BMI's typically over 50.
I am 4 months post-op from RNY.
In a nutshell:
The DS bypass is different from the RNY bypass (more extensive and therefore requires even more vitamin supplementation than RNY), the DS utilizes a sleeve instead of a pouch, and includes removal of the rest of the stomach (where in RNY they leave the stomach) but leaves your pyloric valve (which controls how fast food exist the sleeve, and which is removed in the RNY). There is no dumping syndrome with DS (but only 30% of RNYers dump, anyway), they mus****ch carb intake just like RNYers have to, but need more fat in their diets than RNYers (because they malabsorb fats much more than RNYers). The amount of weight lost is usually a bit higher with DS (but just a bit); where the DS is much "better" is when it comes to regain. Those with DS regain much less frequently (and regain much less weight when they do regain some) than RNYers. Some people have trouble with gas after DS,and a few have trouble with oily diarrhea.
I debated between the two, and the twoi primary reasons I chose RNY instead of DS (even though my BMI was almost 57) was that I didn't like the idea of the extra lack of vitamin absorption and need for extra vitamin supplements (I don't even like what comes with the RNY, but sleeve wasn't available to me 6 years ago) and the fact that the one person I knew who had a DS carried a change of clothes in her car in case of "accidents"... and I was willing to risk any and all potential side effects of RNY, but was not willing to risk that particular side effect of the DS.
