So annoyed with my nurses!
I'm on my post op liquid diet. 6 days in. I been having trouble getting my protein in. Today I've had 30g so far and Ive sipped water the rest of the day And I don't know if I should feel full from the water and shake or if I should be able to keep drinking throughout the day. I don't know if I'm able to feel full yet or what feeling full feels like now. I finally got the nurse on the phone to ask her some questions and she acted like she didn't know any of the answers. I was asking if I should drink the water constantly to get all of my fluids in or should I get full from it and have to take a break to let it pass through my pouch. She said that I should feel full with my shakes and water after drinking a small amount like I would with food. I just don't understand and I'm so frustrated bc I'm trying to drink as much as I can and now I feel like I over did it today and drank past my being full even though I didn't feel full? I feel like I'm going to mess up because of my lack of being directed. The nutritionist was good aboit supporting me pre op and leading me in the right direction but never gave me any instructions on how I will feel, being full, portion size, nothing and I can't get her on the phone, she never returns my messages...and I feel like I will screw up by the time I hear from her. HELP!!
Honestly? I think you are overthinking this ... Fluid is more important than protein - just keep sipping as much as you can - that's your only job at this point ... You may or may not feel full - it;s not important other than making sure you don't feel uncomfortable.
You will honestly be just fine ...

I think you've read posts here about how you don't have a pyloric valve between your pouch and small intestine anymore, so liquids go right through, right? it's very common not to feel full from water or shakes, especially after the first few days post op.
How would you have drank past your being full if you didn't feel full?
Get your fluids in. Drink as much and as fast as feels comfortable. Make sure you get at least 64 oz, but it's fine to get more, even a whole lot more, if you want.

Ok. I just hate not knowing everything that I need to do, watch out for , not do before I do it. And then when I can't get a clear answer from anyone at the drs office. I though it was ok to drink as much as possible but when she told me to only drink a little at a time and then let it pass though I was like well damn, wish I would have known this before I've been sipping nonstop today! I just hate being uninformed And I guess It is causing me to overthink. Thanks
And yes Kelly, that's exactly why I think that I shouldn't get full with water or any other liquids. And then the nurse is contradicting that so I just didn't know what to think. I also am worried bc I've only lost like 3 pounds 6 days after surgery when I was always a quick loser. So I'm scared that I'm going to be the one person that it doesn't work on!! I'm just crazy I think lol I know, it's a sprint not a race and I've been trying to stay positive! Thanks for always helping me when I'm lost!! I appreciate it very much!
My surgery was on 7/8. Liquids were not filling me up. No****er, not Jello, not soup, not even the protein shake. I felt empty which for me equates hungry. Since my diet has progressed, I get full on 1/2 cup cottage cheese or 1/4 cup hummus...and I mean FULL. I feel a little tightness in my chest... a little pressure and that's what full feels like for me. An extra bite is uncomfortable. I had a band a few years ago so I kind of know what to expect but I can understand your frustration.
Yes, Don't over think it. Take it slow. you will know when you have enough. I was told to take small sips every 5 minutes. It helps. When you over think it and get scared, then you end up being dehydrated because you are afraid. Little weight loss in the beginning is common, only for the fact that you had an IV in for a while and you haven't even begun to get rid of all of that gas! lol! Try to stay away from constantly weighing yourself. It will come off.Your main job is to get up and walk, get plenty of rest and SIP, SIP, SIP! You will be ok. Some nurses can be annoying, but remember, if they haven't gone through this, they really won't know first hand. When you become overwhelmed just remember to breath! *hugs* and welcome to your new life!
