do you eat what you want but small portions
That's a loaded question ...
I eat pretty much what I want, but I strive to make good choices *most* of the time. The truth is that I just don't want to eat crap now. The only foods that are absolutely off limits are cake and ice cream - because they are just not worth it to me for the consequences I pay.
The short answer to your question is that I can tell you that I absolutely do NOT eat what I ate before surgery, but smaller portions. That would not work for me, and I suspect that most regainers chose that particular plan after surgery!

Yes, I eat what I want to now...the doctor said no food was off limits to me IF my pouch likes it. However, like Sin Kim says, my tastes have changed and I don't want the stuff I used to eat. I was never much of a fruit or veggie eater, but I am now. I try to eat protein first, but I always end up eating fruits and veggies too. I was a sandwich person, but I don't eat bread much at all - maybe once a month. Bread doesn't bother me, but I just don't want it anymore. Same with cake and ice cream. I can handle both of them and sometimes I have a little of one or both, but it isn't a priority with me. I used to just LOVE pizza and I still eat it, but very little. It's just not worth it to me anymore.
Sometimes. Not always. I eat mostly healthy food, which is what I want a lot of the time. Sometimes I want junk food and I eat that occasionally but not every time I want it. If I did that, I would be eating too many calories, too much fat, too much sugar, and not enough protein.

I like to think of my obesity as being being in remission-it could come roaring back if I do not stay vigilant.

Along the way I have been finiding it very helpful to have my treats and celebrations in moderation. especially when I travel for work go on vacation etc.. The go back to my safe diet and exercise plan. Honestly I find myself not indulging as much as I once might have.Practice makes perfect.
I am now at the lowest wieght after RNY that I have ever been. I plan to continue to lose wieght. My next goal is 240, which would be 200lbs total loss from my highest. I believe eating like this will help me get there.
Good luck!

It depends on what I want. If what I want is a bacon cheeseburger and onion rings, then no (the grease in even a small portion of a bacon cheeseburger would make me feel icky and onion rings are the only thing so me my surgery 6 years ago that are guaranteed to make me vomit). If it is pizza, then yes... BUT I eat only two items with crust and then eat just the toppings (and I usually blot the pizza with paper towels to remove excess grease). If it is ice cream, or chocolate, or cookies, then yes... BUT I eat a very small amount.
I am far enough out that -- most of the time -- what I want is something that is fairly healthy for me, so when I do get a craving for something that isn't (macaroni and cheese or mashed potatoes with butter are two recent examples), I am able to have a little bit and not feel deprived or gain any weight. If you make healthy, well balanced choices 90% of the time, you can splurge a little the other 10% of the time.
I do NOT recommend adopting this approach until after your weight is stable, though, and your healthy eating habits are well-established.
