I don't get hunger like before surgery at all. When my BS gets low I tend to get nauseated and I know I need to eat.

True hunger never returned for me.  I have to make myself eat on schedule and sometimes I forget to even then if I'm busy.  My post-WLS hunger signal is a slight emptiness feeling in my pouch.

Sometimes it helps to learn what is hunger from hunger and what is head hunger.  Here are some other discussions about the topic.

I think it is a pervasive myth perpetuated by some surgeons who ought to know better. I equate my hunger with my low fuel light coming on. It is a warning I am low on fuel--not a wholesale invitation to eat like a linebacker.

I get hunger.  But if I am very very busy I can also forget to eat...like I'll know  I should eat something, but its not bothersome enough for me to stop and get something.

Never get hungry or hunger pains more a sense of "empyness" if that makes sense.

Did you have surgery 5 years ago? My hunger returned in the first year. I'm thinking it does with the majority of us  or am I wrong?

I am only 3 months out and I get hungry.. I try to eat some kind of protein every 2-3 hrs. Maybe just a cheese stick or something, but I do get hungry.

True hunger returned to me 3 months postop. Not sure why a surgeon would make a generalization like that, but as you see by the posts, peoples' experiences run the gamut. My experience was that, as the nerves apparently healed pretty quickly, my true hunger was different from preop hunger: bit less urgent, can get ignored for a while, but get pretty shaky & irritable if I go too long b/w meals. Head hunger, that's another story..... Same beast, and I work every day on taming it!
