Is laxatives and enemas going to be a permanent part of my life post op?

My surgeon just put me on Linzess last week & I have had no issues since. I don't have to use stool softners or laxatives or Miralax anymore. He said it was a newer drug & supposedly 4x the strength of Miralax. I'm happy with it so far. It is very expensive tho. Thank God my deductible is met for the year & it is covered 100% but for 30 pills it was around $245.00.

I rarely need anything for constipation.  I do eat some kind of fruit every day, and eat full fat cheese, nuts, and regular butter (and drink 2% milk more days than not) to get some fat into my diet.  Don't underestimate the value of fats in avoiding constipation!

When I do occasioanlly need some help, I opt for a couple of doses of Benefiber in a drink rather than Miralax, etc.

I had issues before surgery, but none after.  Guess I was one of the lucky ones.  I do, however, make sure I get some fat in my diet everyday, usually olive or coconut oil.

My first 8 months were like that, and then I pulled back on the protein powder in favor of more whole food versions of protein including veggies with protein in them (kale and beets) and I make sure to only have one serving of cheese per day.   I'm much more regular now.  Ironically, my NUT asked me to go back to one scoop of protein powder a day again, and immediately I started having issues.

It's weird to me when I hear about people having trouble going, because I hardly ever have a solid bowel movement... I guess I've just gotten used to daily diarrhea. Ugh...the things we go through to get healthy.

I switched this week to carbonyl iron. I have had a little bit of a problem and last week had a big problem. I had to go to MOM. So I switched my multi to a no iron pill and added the iron supplements.

We will see if that helps out.

Chocolate low fat milk, dark chocolate/almonds in small amounts work for me.

My doc says to up fluids to avoid those issues. I get 80-100 ounces daily of fluids and I don't get constipated. Maybe he's right? Sorry you and others seem to be having such problems. Hopefully you can find the right balance for you and work this problem out for good. Best wishes on your journey :)
