poll about addiction
I don't think looking forward to food means you're addicted to it, no. I look forward to many things - food, a bubble bath, going to bed when I'm tired, visiting friends, taking my dog for a walk on a nice day, etc. I'm not addicted to bubble baths, my bed, or my dog. I sure had unhealthy eating habits, but that doesn't automatically equal an addiction.

No, I was not addicted to food, alcohol, or anything else before my RNY and I have not developed an addiction to anything since my RNY.
I have, however, built up a tolerance to the Vicodin I have been taking for over two years for knee pain (and a higher dose for about a year for my mystery abdominal pain)... but no physical dependence let alone addiction. I am just very aware that it doesn't help nearly as much as it used to.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Banded Oct 2008: 290
RNY Feb 2012: 245

I am half the person I was in 2008.
1. Were you addicted to food before you had RNY? Probably to some degree, but not completely addicted, does that even make sense?
2. Were you addicted to alcohol before you had RNY? No
3. Were you addicted to anything else before you had RNY? And if so, what? No addictions
4. If you were not addicted to alcohol before you had RNY, did you become addicted to alcohol after you had RNY? Nope, I"m a lightweight - and was a lightweight before surgery - so I get silly on one drink and stop before things get rediculous and expensive.
5. Did you develop any addictioins after RNY? And if so, to what? Nope
I was addicted to food, cigarettes (nicotine) and caffeine before surgery.
I am 11 months out of surgery and now only addicted to caffeine.
250 day of surgery

Ahhh the not so joyful rollercoaster of addictions in my life is long. Alcohol addiction starting in high school, Drug addiction added in, in my early 20s, I was then thin as a rail. I stopped using drugs 21+ years ago, stopped drinking 15 years ago (while it was an addiction then I can partake here and there now so it would beg the question of is it an addiction but yes it met the criteria at the time), after drugs came the food addiction and the weight gain, I also have addictive tendancies towards gambling, relationships (read is it love or addiction, it was most often addiction in early relationships), oh yes and cigarettes yet another addiction.
So in answer to your questions:
1 yes
2 many years ago yes.
3 yes long list up top
4 I've had a taste of rum runner on a cruise at 6 mo out, felt drunk after a couple of sips have not and will not drink again, don't like the feeling of being drunk/ out of control.
5 yes. Lortab when I was having my pain last spring and cont. with it until 3 weeks after gall bladder surgery, went through withdrawal and would have done just about anything to get some more. Won't be doing that again. My husband would probably say my shopping has become an addiction my therapist said he thinks it's more impulsiveness, I'm undecided but could see it becoming an issue. I'm aware I'll need to be extra careful not to replace the food addiction with something else to numb things.

I chased my dreams, and my dreams, they caught me!
1. Were you addicted to food before you had RNY? Yes, I believe I was
2. Were you addicted to alcohol before you had RNY? No
3. Were you addicted to anything else before you had RNY? And if so, what? Cigarettes, about 15 years ago, but quit
4. If you were not addicted to alcohol before you had RNY, did you become addicted to alcohol after you had RNY? No
5. Did you develop any addictioins after RNY? And if so, to what? I am still early out (10 weeks tomorrow) but I already know I have to be extremely careful because I could easily get addicted again to something. Like the Vicodin and Flexeril I take for back pain. So far, so good. But it scares the crap out of me. I stay far away from alcohol for this reason as well. I'm actually looking for a counselor who specializes in addictions.

My blog about my journey - Up From Under
1. Were you addicted to food before you had RNY? - For sure.
2. Were you addicted to alcohol before you had RNY? - No (non-drinker completely).
3. Were you addicted to anything else before you had RNY? And if so, what? - Excessive spending/shopping.
4. If you were not addicted to alcohol before you had RNY, did you become addicted to alcohol after you had RNY? - No
5. Did you develop any addictioins after RNY? And if so, to what? - Still struggling with excessive shopping. By excessive shopping I mean browsing/buying for things I do not need at all, in particular it's bad on Amazon...I have brought it up with my therapist multiple times and have only made slight progress so far...One suggestion they made was when online shopping, allowing myself to browse, and put it into the cart, but then x'ing out the window before actually paying for it/buying. This somewhat works but it's difficult...It doesn't interfere with bills or anything, but that is not the point because it is money that would otherwise be put away/saved. You know it's addiction when you get that elated sense/high when you are doing it, and you do the action just for that. My husband would say I talk excessively fast when speaking about purchases I've made and my mood changes.
