Chewing Gum After Surgery

I don't know of any reason not to chew gum after surgery.

Don't swallow it.  It's possible, though unlikely, it could get stuck in the opening between the pouch and small intestine.

But chewing it?  I chew it and have no problems.

I don't make it a habit of swallowing gum, so I think I am good.

Besides, what am I 5?   Maybe I should check to see if there is a ban on swallowing marbles or coins.  ;)

I  know.  It seems some surgeons think adults are not able to avoid swallowing gum but I haven't accidentally swallowed gum since I was about four.

HW333--SW 289--GW of 160 5' 11" woman.  I only know the way I know & when you ask for input/advice, you'll get the way I've been successful through my surgeon & nutritionist. Please consult your surgeon & nutritionist for how to do it their way.  Biggest regret? Not doing this 10 years ago! Every day is better than the day before...and it was a pretty great day!

My Surgeon does not allow gum chewing due to swallowing air.  Just as he does not allow straws for the same reason.  Minor things to have to give up for having reached my goal weight

I was told it was because some people swallow air and it makes it uncomfortable. But I never was a big gum chewer so i didn't ask more about it.

I swallow more air with my CPAP than I ever have with chewing gum.

My program says that you can swallow air and it can make you burp and fart. They said if you're okay with that, then go ahead.

I am a guy, I do that anyway, no problem with doing it after surgery.
