I haven't had chinese food since before surgery. I'm 5 months out & I usually just eat broccoli with brown sauce (without the chicken). I'm not sure how much sugar is in it. I googled it and on one website it said 0 sugar (which I find hard to believe). Has anyone had it and was ok or have any of you dumped on it ? I know everyone is different, just wanted to hear some experiences :)

For me, I'd have to know exactly the place I was going and what they put in their sauce. The one I looked at for my husband once was LOADED with sugar and thankfully we dodged that bullet. I did get steamed scallops at the local Chinese place and they were great. No sauce though.

I imagine it would vary depending on how it's made.  Are you planning on getting it from a restaurant?  If so, ask them how much sugar is in it.  If you are buying it from a store, it should say on the label.  If you are making it yourself, you can figure it out based on the recipe you use.

I usually taste the sauce If I can taste sugar - I just don't eat it.  But beside sugar they may added some other things that some people can be sensitive to.. There are foods I can't eat now - even though they do not have much sugar - the pouch does not like  MSG - and I get sick almost every time I try ... There are some Chinese places that do not add that - and use fresh ingredients - but some other places - I just gave up trying - almost anything there made me sick..

I eat Chinese all the time. I have never had an issue with it.

You can certainly ask if there is sugar in the sauce.

Too funny Sherrie P, I try to try new foods only at home, so if it doesn't agree I am not at a restaurant or someone's house.  I am only 3 months post-op, but would love an egg roll!  We will see...

It depends on the particular sauce since there are a number of variations.  Some have a lot of sugar.  If the nutritional info you are looking at is from a reputable source (the restaurant or the product manufacturer) and says no sugar, it may very well be true.  I have run into several cases of inaccurate info from several online sources, though, so I take their info with a grain of salt.

If you just eat the broccoli and sauce without the chicken, though, you aren't getting any protein, so I wouldn't risk it (but, then again, I wouldn't eat it at all with no protein in it).

If it is in a restaurant, chances are high that it is highly processed (sugar, additives, msg, etc...)

I know several post-ops that have no issues but at 3 years, I still don't process items at a Chinese restaurant well and I chalk it up to all the 'junk' in their sauces and such. I do fine with sushi and sashimi and I eat home prepared Asian cuisine just fine.

If you really want it, just try a little bit. Order it as take out and try it at home if you that is what you want. However, make sure you have eaten your protein first if you are not eating it with the chicken.

I am creating my own revolution and PAMdemonium reigns!
