Not happy with the weight loss at all!

I'm sorry you have been having issues, and I truly relate to the turtle pace, since I match you.  I weighed 247 at surgery, hit 167 in November for a total of 80 lb in 9 months (sound familiar)!  We slow losers need to keep on keeping on though, because really what is the alternative.  Yes, it's wonderful for folks who can lose 20-30 lb in a month (even if it's 'only' at the beginning), when we struggle for every lb lost.  I had 2 months of no loss and for the past month I lost 5 lb. Hooray, stall broken and my cumulative since I started tracking pre-surgery is now 105 lb.  I hope to hit 100 from surgery at one year but that's just what I want and am shooting for.  I know, deep in my heart and soul I know that I will make my goal.  Even if it takes another year to get the next 40 lb off, it's happening.

Take heart, there are plenty of us turtles around - but the only race I'm in is for the prize at the end, my life back!  And I've already gotten that :)

Bless you!!

When I first had surgery I was given a timeline to expect:

Month 1 - 20 pounds

Month 2-6 - 10 pounds

Month 7-12 - 5 pounds

I have seen many people lose just as quickly without surgery.  I have seen many people maintain their weight loss after surgery, but very few maintain without surgery.

You are about halfway through your honeymoon and can still use your malabsorption to help you lose more weight.  Many believe that the slower you lose weight, the better you do at keeping it off.  I saw one lady lose 50 pounds her first month pre-op.

She regained just as quickly after the honeymoon period when she went back to bacon cheeseburger plates.  This is a lifetime commitment.  In reality, once you reach your goal, it will not matter what you weighed on any particular day during the losing phase.

I was amazed that weight did not come off quicker after surgery.  Another thing that I did not expect was for my body to just stop losing weight when it was ready.  One day the scale just stopped going down.  Same diet, same exercise and I stayed the exact same for almost two years.

I am so sorry that you feel that way!! But I guess it is understandable, we all want to lose faster than we actually do, I know I would...But it is still better to lose slowly than to not lose at all!! And with the surgery I believe it will be easier to keep the weight off. So keep following your plan and I am sure you will get there and most importantly, stay there!!

Don't worry about venting. I think a lot have felt discouraged at some point in this journey over something.

But I have to agree with the other posters who suggested you might not be eating enough. If exercising would put you in a deficit especially. Have you calculated your BMR? It estimates the number of calories that you need to consume to survive daily if you did nothing but lay in bed all day. If you aren't getting in enough your body is going to hang on.

Just a thought. Hang in there and you will make it.

No i have not had a BMR but it's something i really want to and really should get done! My program does them for $100 i believe something like that. When i have that extra money after Christmas i will ask about this =)

Thanks everyone for your opinions, wisdom, etc. I know i am hard on myself but i am also still playing compare with my friends who had the same surgery weeks apart from me and have lost heck of a lot more. It is discouraging because it makes me believe and know i am doing something wrong. Am i perfect? Nope! I've had the slip up of a slice of pizza, or a piece of candy just not the whole pizza or the king size candy bar. I do eat way more weigh****chers ice cream or skinny cow ice cream than i probably should 2 reasons for that. The first reason is it tastes good. The second reason is it feels good and goes down nicely with my ulcer. I also occasionally eat the RS SF candy i honestly believe something in the sugar alcohols is helping me poo more lol. This morning i woke up to 219 so i lost 1lb of the 3 i gained. Maybe by the end of next week i will be back down to 217 or lower would be nice right? I want to be a success but with the weight loss going the way it has it's hard not to feel like a failure. I do still always do protein first. I have at least one quest bar a day which is 21g protein, 1 can of pure protein shake which is 35g protein, i also do greek yogurt 12g protein, and lots of lunch meat/cottage cheese. I guess this just going to be another wait it out kind of thing... sure is a lot of those on this journey.

You might want to mix up your exercise routine, too!

I started with walking and riding my bike. Then I moved to elliptical plus yoga and then to running plus yoga and Pilates. When I had my double leg injury (oh how I wish there was a great story behind that, but alas, there is not!) I had to go to NO exercise and then was able to do core things on a yoga ball and slowly back to the elliptical and (I HOPE!) trial run today now that it is dry out after a virtual monsoon here for the past week.

But I will say when I started up something new with exercise, the next few weeks posted higher numbers of loss than previously. If you have not tried running, I cannot say enough good things about the C25K free app from Zen Labs and tracking progress with (also free) Nike Run. It is super to get out on the road and just RUN! Prior to this summer I'd have only run if someone with a chainsaw were chasing me and even then, only until I could duck into someplace safe. I got to the point where I made myself stop because the program doesn't want you over doing it, but I start (hopefully!) training for a half marathon on the 24th and seriously cannot even WAIT to do longer runs as I return to that form of exercise. Do I sound like a zealot? I guess I am...but I am the type to evangelize that which I love and boy oh boy, do I ever love running! Do go and invest in a pair of professionally fitted shoes at a running store though. My old shoes hurt after a bit of walking and they turned out to be the exact WRONG shoe for me. My new shoes feel like an extension of my feet to the point that I have gone in my room to put them on only to find I already have them on!

And hey--the tortoise wins the race every single time, don't worry about not being the hare. :)

Hmm  i wonder if i would even be able to run at this weight lol 217 lbs. Never tried but i need my back to cooperate first. I wish i could walk more than 1/2 mile without my bak hurting so badly. I miss walking the most.

I was running at far more than 217, I can tell you that!  I found that my back and legs hurt when I did not have well fitted shoes. Go and get fitted and give yourself some time to get used to them and then go for a great, long stride walk. You might be very surprised at what you find. I also have seen a real difference since doing a gait clinic. I learned to really hold in my tummy as I ran and have core support during a run. GO FOR IT!! You can do it! :)

I think we need to be realistic with what this surgery can do for us, it can't make us loose all the extra weight we gained, statistics show it can help us loose up to 70 percent of our excess weight. Some people are lucky and loose more all their excess weight, others not so much. Average weight loss is 100lbs, some loose more than that, others less. I know a guy who lost 60lbs, there are things that contribute to low weight loss and number one is lack of exercise, diet alone will help you loose weight but diet with exercise will do even more.  A lot of people who I know lost at least a 100lbs were gym fanatics, working out 6 days a wk. Granted some people can't exercise for whatever health issues. Just remember you are in a better place weight wise that before the surgery. My psychiatrist asked me what I expect from the surgery and I said better health, she then told me that was the right answer and attitude because many people put a weight they would like to loose and then when they do not attain it, they become disappointed and feel the surgery didn't work. She also had the surgery and lost 70 ibs and she is overweight but she is healthier which is the most important thing. I need to loose 100lbs, if I loose 70-80 of that I would still be  happy as the last time I weighed that little was in high school. Focus instead on total overall weight loss rather than post surgery and think of all the health benefits of your weight loss right now.
