Question for those w/ artificial knees
I had my first knee replacement done in March (so this is the first really cold weather I have endured since then) and just had the second one done in early November. We have had two single digit or nearly single digit cold snaps so far this season, and both times after the first day of the harsh cold my knees have been hurting (the newly replaced one more than the first one, but that doesn't surprise me).
Do those of you who have artificial knees find that significant cold (or the barometric pressure changes) cause knee discomfort (it is pain in the new knee but only discomfort in the earlier replaced knee)?
For some reason, I just assumed that the cold wouldn't affect the artificial knee the way it did the natural one with the arthritis. Maybe it won't once they are both completely "healed" (the surgeon said it takes a full year for complete healing)..?

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
I have a cousin who says the new knee parts get colder faster than your actual body thus causing some pain/discomfort.
I had mine done in 2009 and 2010. Really never noticed cold causing pain but this winter I am having some pain and more stiffness than before. Didn't really think about it being weather related - assumed I was just sitting around too much (LOL). Could very well be weather related.
Are you glad you did it? I am so glad I did mine. Didn't realize how much pain I was in (came on gradually over 10+ years****il it was gone.

Hi Lora - I had a hip replacement rather than a knee replacement, however I do find that when it is very cold I feel some pain and definitely stiffness in the artificial hip.
Thanks to all. I had to go out in 12° weather today to shovel half of the driveway and although both the knees were okay while I was shoveling, afterward my newly replaced knee was really sore and stiff whereas the other one wasn't any worse than it was before I was outside, so clearly some of the problem is just that I am still only 8 weeks out from the second replacement.
It makes me feel better to know that this is kind of common, though. Two friends have also verified that their spouses who have artificial joints (two knees and one hip) also get stiff and uncomfortable when it gets really cold. If both knees end up only being as stiff and uncomfortable as the first one I had replaced, it won't be a big deal, I guess... just surprising and annoying, LOL.
