Does this new protein drink of 3.4 oz, 180 cals, 42 g of protein seem real?
I mean, god knows I would love to be able to get protein in a shot...but is this the right kind? And would we absorb it? It claims to be for bariatric patients...but then again I just took Caltrate calcium CARBONATE accidentally for a month so I am second-guessing everything... http://www.newwheybariatric.com/product/
If we absorb the calories, then we absorb the protein.
According to the ASBMS, it's just a myth that we can't absorb more than 30 grams at a time.

New Whey contains mostly collagen, which is an incomplete protein. It's made from the bones, hooves and skin of horses, cows and pigs. It's the same stuff Jello is made of. No one considers Jello a good source of protein, right? You'll get very little protein from them.
There is a brand called Yes Whey which is the only brand that contains all whey protein. It's the only brand that is worth buying.

While attending NUT classes before surgery I was showed this exact product and told how they would benefit us. I purchased the watermelon flavor. Once I received them I started "researching" these on OH site, and found out from past posts that they are not a good product for us. Ughh, between buying the wrong vitamins and these "shots" of protein I have spent way too much money on items we can't use. Your doing the right thing by researching them first before buying. Save your money.
Have a good weekend.

Yep. According to manufacturer itself a few years ago, the PDCAAS (bioavailability/digestibility score) of these collagen shots is .08 (and that is on a scale of 0-1)! That means you will get less than 4 of that 42g of protein!
Plus, the texture is slimy and disgusting and the taste isn't much better.
As Kelly said, though, there are protein suits called Yes Whey that are 100% whey protein that are fine. The texture isn't as slimy but the taste is still questionable. Pay close attention to expiration dates, though, because as they approach that date they can end up with a thick glob at the bottom of the tube that just does NOT redistribute!

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.
Thanks, all! About 99% of the time I find that if it sounds too good to be true, it's too good to be true :) And once again, that's the case here. Sad that they have banners on OH (that's how I heard about it). How many other unsuspecting people will see "42 g of protein" and get excited like I did and buy them?
Thanks again. Y'all are a wealth of knowledge!
I know, I wish OH would only allow advertisements for products that were actually suitable for WLS patients, but apparently they allow any company that wants to pay them to purchase ad space.
If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
You can try the Yes Whey brand from Bariatric Advantage, though. You can also make your own protein shot by mixing a scoop of protein powder in about three ounces of liquid. It will be pretty thick and strong tasting, but so will the shots you buy.
