Salt and lemons - more than for hurting a papercut?
Met with my NUT for 6 mo check in. She describes herself as a bit "out there" - and generally I would agree, but she is sweet, super supportive, excellent with the WLS population and a wealth of information... some of which is pretty... interesting.
We discussed my chronic thirst and issues with feeling dehydration especially after traveling. Her suggestion: first thing in the morning have a glass of water with a sprinkling of salt and a lemon slice. She was horrified when I asked if she meant table salt, and tells me it must be "real" salt - sea salt... and not just ANY sea salt, but Celtic sea salt. Ummmmm...
The thinking behind it is that our water is "too refined" and the processes we go through to make our water contaminant free also strip the naturally occurring minerals that enhance cellular function, or something like that. I blurted out, "Hey, it's like Gatorade without all of the crap that makes it taste good!"
I don't think she liked the analogy, but conceded the point.
I filed the information away, but honestly didn't give it much thought until the next morning when I once again woke up and spit sand out of my mouth. I felt like I have overdosed on Benadryl I was so dry. So, I decided to give it a try.
You know what? Not only did it NOT taste like crap (actually it was kind of good once I got enough lemon in there), but for the first time in months I do not feel thirsty constantly. If I actually wake up tomorrow with some type of moisture in my mouth, I swear I will send her a big 25lb bag of (outrageously expensive) Celtic sea salt. I might even through in a leprechaun in for good measure.
Oh, I can't wait to see your report tomorrow. I have terrible dry mouth, especially in the morning.
If you know anything about me you will know I always drink lemon tea or lemon water, I made my own re-hydration drink after I recently had the flu, lemon juice, salt and sugar in distilled water. Yes real sugar because I needed the carbs. I know table salt is much maligned but we as humans still need the iodine that it provides, so I use it. Its done the trick in getting me back hydrated.
Lemons are a super food in my opinion, have all sorts of excellent health benefits, just not good for the enamel on your teeth so using a straw is recommended.
