I take 3 Chewable Celebrate Calcium Plus 500 a day, for anyone taking them do you take 3 a day? another question, can I have a Pure Protein bar at 10 weeks out, I won't eat at once because I can't just want to snack on it through out the whole day?

I take 3. Sometimes I take an extra one, too. I can't speak to the protein bar.  :-)

I don't use the chewables, but 3 of the Celebrate should be giving you the amount oF calcium RNY post-ops need. We need between 1,500 and 2,000 mg daily.

Regarding the protein bar, consult your nut. If you were given a food list and food plan, it should say whether or not they are allowed.

My husband takes 4 a day, we both want to be on the 2K end of the scale with calcium. I phased out chewables but my husband continues to enjoy them.

As far as the bar, in the beginning when I could not eat a whole one, but bars were allowed, I would cut mine into 12 pieces, freeze them and have a frozen 'chew' at intervals during the day, normally eating two or three at a time. Once I could eat half a bar, I just cut them in half.

I chew one of those amazing and delicious Caramel 500 mg chewables a day - at night.  It's a treat :)  I would love to have it in the morning and afternoon but each one has 3 or 4 carbs so I only allow myself one.  I haven't tried a bar yet - some people who post on the daily "what are you eating today" post eat them all the time, and I have seen others who call them the devil and say they are a slippery slope lol.  I can't speak to that, but they usually have 25 g of carbs and since I am not eating carbs (sniff sniff), I have steered clear.  I love the idea of freezing 12 bites!

I eat 2-3 protein bars a day sometimes. I eat a Quest, Pure Protein or 1/2 of Met Rx bar at a sitting to get in my protein while making it convenient.  I drink ready to drink shakes as well. The big questions I have for you are: Are you getting in all your protein by snacking on one protein bar during the day? Are you taking in other proteins during the day to reach your protein goal?

As a general rule, bars and shakes should not be relied on long term.  They are full of additives and junk we don't need.  The best goal:  shoot to get your requirements from quality whole food sources.

That is not to say I don't OCASSIONALLY have a protein bar--a few times a year, I'll take them when I travel, in the event my blood sugar drops and I need a quick fix, but I do not rely on them for my regular nutrition.

I approve of this message!

Even at my heaviest, I was never a fan of overly processed foods. We need real, whole food, minimally processed, for best health.

Protein bars and shakes probably have a use in the early days, but they are full of crap and there are good whole foods out there that make it possible to get your protein without all the chemicals.

We should be capable of getting all our protein needs in with food after 90 days - I think relying on these to get your protein will give you plenty of room for "extras" in your diet down the road ...  and a lot of them have way more carbs than is necessary or are not 100 per cent truthful about the carbs they do contain!

They seem to be a huge market now, they certainly weren't talked about when I had my surgery!

My bariatric plan allows protein bars at 6 months post RNY.  Most protein bars have about 200 calories and have chemicals & additives as well as sugar alcohols (bad stinky gas).  I agree with others to get your bodys nutrition (fuel for energy and healing and running your brain, heart, kidneys, etc.) from whole foods.  That said, I have protein bars, occasionally, when I'm out and about and will be late for a meal and then I only eat 1/2 bar.. (I'm 5 years post op RNY).

Three protein bars a day would be around 600 calories - that is more than half my calories for the day (for me) and no "real" food for fiber and other vitamin/nutrients.  I carry organic cheese sticks, raw nuts/seeds and dried or fresh fruit with me and find them better nutrition than a protein bar.

I chew 3 (2 hours apart) Celebrate Calcium 500's a day in addition to my multivitamin and other supplements.  Your lab work will tell you if your calcium levels are OK.

I would also ask yourself - "why am i snacking?"  Is your body needing fuel/nutrition?  Do you want to eat because other people are?  Are snacks just a habit?  Are snacks allowed in your bariatric program?  I am allowed snacks, but I ask myself - "How long ago was my last meal?".  "How long until my next meal".  "How much water have I drank in the last hour?"  Does my body need fuel or is it head hunger/"  Eating is NOT an emergency - I can wait until my next meal or planned snack.

Just my thoughts.  I wish you well.  Penny
