Low iron levels, how low is too low?

Just got my 1 yr bloodwork, Ferritin was 6, normal range is 12-140?  I'm on prescription iron supplements now and will be rechecked in 3 months.  Should I be concerned?  Should I expect the supplements to help?  I've been taking a multivitamin with iron all along.

I'm not an expert, but I think that is dangerously low.  I'm surprised they didn't make you do infusions.

Yes, ferritin at 6 is very low. I have iron infusions if mine falls to 7. What kind of iron supplement were you prescribed? They are not all created equal. I have found over the last several years that a heme iron (Proferrin) and a polysaccharide complex iron (FeraMAX) are the most easily absorbed and most effective.

Yes, ferritin below 10 is super super low.  Doctors usually order iron infusions then.  I'd make an appointment with a hematologist ASAP to discuss that.  Were you not taking an iron supplement until now?  How much and what type of iron are you now taking?

When my ferritin was 15, I increased my iron from 75 mg carbonyl to 300 mg carbonyl a day.  In three months my ferritin had gone up to 26.  My point is, you would probably need a very large dose of elemental iron to get your ferritin up, but with it so low, I'd want infusions immediately.

I once had iron level of 4 (not WLS related) had to go in the hospital for blood transfusions. No one at the hospital believed I walked in  on my own 2 feet. They discharged me and it was just above 6. They told me to stay on bedrest for 2 weeks and to take iron. It wasn't even any prescription one, I just took a  dose of ferrous sulfate several times a day. It did come back to normal. I wouldn't be worried about needing more than what was prescribed, but I would want my blood level checked sooner than 3 months. To me that's a long time. Good Luck!
