Cabbage Soup Diet Week- Need some advice!

I did a search and saw some older posts on this topic but thought I would register and just jump right in with my first post here! My surgery date is Monday, Jan 26. My doctor requires the Cabbage Soup Diet for 7 days prior to surgery and literally it is making me sick. I eat everything else allowed on that day and have managed about a cup a day of the soup but gag with every bite and eventually get sick each time I eat it. Today, I woke up sick and couldn't stomach anything all day. A friend who had the surgery suggested just switching to chicken broth or any other kind of broth, along with whatever else is for that particular day on the cabbage soup diet.

Can anyone share your experiences with this particular pre-op diet?

I've never heard of a surgeon requiring a Cabbage Soup Diet pre-operatively.

Gagging and getting sick from eating it isn't good for you.  I'd call your surgeon's office and let them know you just can't stomach the soup and would like to switch to broth.

Just switch to broth - cabbage soup doesn't have any miracle properties that you won't find in chicken broth!!!!!    Sometimes common sense trumps a surgeons weird  and frankly, ridiculous ideas!

I swear some surgeons do these pre op diets to have a laugh at their patients' expense

Like Cathy, I have never heard of a surgeon requiring a cabbage soup diet pre-op!  That is VERY odd. Many require an all-liquid diet, but not cabbage soup. There is nothing magical about cabbage.

As the others suggested, just switch to broth and/or stock (stock has more flavor and more protein than broth).

p.s. just out of curiosity, what does this surgeon require for the post-op diet?

he probably. Thinks the small amount of fiber I the cabbage will keep you from being hungry. That is about the only difference in cabbage soup and plain broth.

I also would switch to broth, but if you feel. Better about it,call and ask for permission.

Your surgeon has his head up his ---uuuh, never mind.  I remember the cabbage soup diet from one of my very earliest drastic diets:  OMG, deadly gas!!

Try a good protein-rich diet, lots of water, mild exercise.

I tried out various protein drinks, usually for breakfast, along with a banana for potassium

For lunch, a good luncheon meat and cheese sandwich on 1 slice of whole grain bread, with mustard.  An Apple.

For dinner, a balanced meal, like a good Weigh****cher's-style portion, with lots of complex carbs.

You might want to save your lunch apple for an evening snack.

If not, use your protein drinks for hungry times.  You'll find that protein will keep you from having the hunger pangs you might be afraid of.

Oh, yeah, drink lots of water.

Sometimes just because a doctor has MD after their name doesn't mean they know EVERYTHING.

I know I don't.  I just know I managed to lose about 35# preop.
