RNY and Diabetes

I have seen several posts where people have had their doctor tell them that the RNY is better for diabetics. Why? :)

For diabetes, DS is best, followed by RNY, then VSG. The statistics are all very clear. As for the scientific reasons, there is still a lot of conjecture and debate.

Nobody knows why it happens, but most surgeons believe it has to do with the changes made to the routing of the intestines.  It is common for Type 2 diabetics to be off of medication and have good blood sugar readings starting the day of surgery.  This happens to about 75% of patients.

DS has more re-routing of the intestines and an even better track record for putting Type 2 diabetes into remission.  Its success rate is about 95%.

The longer you have had diabetes, the less chance of a remission.

With the sleeve, diabetes remission can occur after weight loss.  The statistics are about 50%.

One woman in my support group who has Type 1 diabetes, while she will never totally be off insulin...the amount of insulin she takes dropped dramatically with her having Gastric Bypass.(RNY). Again, started going down from day of surgery, and overall is much more stable. She used to have crashes at work where she would pass out...bad stuff.

Many testimonials of RNY patients going into the Hospital on Metformin and insulin and coming out on nothing... and yes they don't totally understand why. (I don't see DS patients in my support group)

Diabetes remission with the sleeve is pretty much the same as if you lost weight any other way, you have to wait for the weight to come off.

My surgeon said that with RNY, I'd have the best chance of getting off all diabetes meds immediately after surgery. He was right.

While doing the 2 week liquid prep diet, I had issues with my blood sugar going too low, full remission after surgery! I'm also off all meds for HBP and high cholesterol. Blood sugar has been stable, sometimes a little low since surgery.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 four years+ before the surgery.

I was Type 2 diabetic before surgery and my A1C ranged anywhere from 10.7 to 8.5(the day of surgery).  at my 3 month follow up my blood work showed my A1C at 4.7 without medication.  My 6 month showed 4.5 without any medication.

I don't know exactly how it works, but it does.  

I also have been off all diabetes medications since before surgery. I feel great and my blood work is great. I had my RNY 5 and a half months ago and am at a normal BMI already with no complications. Most wonderful healthy thing I have ever done for myself. It is like my body does not even remember it used to have diabetes. Shhhhhhhhhh!

I was an insulin dependent type II diabetic -- A1c ranged from 9.3 to 6.5 -- on insulin and Metformin.  

I now range with an A1c between 4.2 and 4.9 without any medications.

The RNY was worth it just to be in diabetic remission.

I'm only 5 1/2 weeks out but can anyone tell me when/if the dark ring around the back of my neck will fade? Did any of you have that symptom with your diabetes 2?
