Straws

I am just curious - I was told by my clinic that we are not allowed straws when drinking liquids.  Does anyone knows if this is for life or just a few months?

My doctor said post op for 6 weeks. I use them now without incident. The fear is that you will suck in too much air and have discomfort or not be able to eat protein.

Straws are fine. Like everything else in the world, if doing it makes you uncomfortable, stop doing it.

I avoided them the first few months but use them now with no trouble.

3 months post op here. Tried one for the first time last weekend, and I had gas pains.

I was so bummed... I love bendy straws!

Our group does not allow them. I stay clear of them in general now.

I have no problem using straws and neither does my surgeon.  I've walked into his exam room drinking water or iced tea from a cup with a straw and he doesn't bat an eye.  Of course, that's just my surgeon and my experience, but he's pretty conservative otherwise and I'm sure he would have said something to me if using a straw could cause damage.

I was told no straws for "a while".  I have used them a couple times since surgery and didn't have any trouble.

Straws make you drink faster.  This 1) can make you uncomfortable with carbonated drinks, and 2) can make you consume too many liquid calories.

Having said that, I used, and use, straws all the time.  Just be aware of what you are doing.
