I am just over 50 pounds overweight. I am 5'3 and weigh approximately 202. I can't figure out which surgery is best for me. I had a lap band and ate around it. I kind of feel like the gastric bypass is a smarter solution for me rather than the sleeve. If I am going to go through this all again I don't want to regain the weight back. I have elevated high blood pressure. I can't drink coffee after dinner as I get heartburn if I do. I can't lie down after I eat for a while or that will also cause heartburn. I also need to be mindful of when I take my daily meds because this can also be an issue.

Have you had a revision surgery with only approximately 50 pounds to lose? Is this too dramatic of a surgery for me? Should I just stick with the sleeve? What are your thoughts?

Also, I am concerned about not being able to take medicine for occasional inflammation due to arthritis. Is this going to be a problem taking Aleve or Ibuprophen?

You absolutely can not take Aleve, Ibuprofen, or any NSAID after surgery. The risk for ulcers is too great.

if you already have heartburn, aka acid reflux, the sleeve will not be right for you , as it can cause the reflux to be worse.

With heartburn like you've had, stay away from the sleeve. And you shouldn't take Aleve, ibuprophen, or any NSAID after WLS.

RNY is great. I love having it given my issues. But like the band it is just a tool. It doesn?t work unless I make changes. You might consider addressing The underlying eating issues with a therapist. Mine is so great and helping me see things I never realized. Good luck.

I guess maybe that's my question. Clearly I'm a food addict. I've been in overeaters anonymous for over 20 years. I can lose weight but can't keep it off for too long. Two years ago I was at goal and now I've gained back 50 pounds. I learned to eat around the band. I thought RNY would prevent me from doing that. I understand I need to keep up with the exercise. I admit I got lazy and cut way back on that. I thought with RNY you couldn't eat much so is that why folks gain the weight back- not enough exercise? The high protein low carb diet is easy for me. I can live with that.

You can absolutely still eat around an RNY. "Slider foods" like carbs or caloric liquids will go right through your pouch, allowing you to take in enough calories to gain weight back.

I can't eat nearly as much in one sitting as before surgery. Now, I can eat a restaurant burger, maybe. Before, I'd have a whole order of potato skins, burger, fries, rolls, and maybe dessert.

But, I can eat all day now if I want to. I can add 500 calories of butter or peanut butter to something. I can drink 1,000 calories of something in just a few minutes. I could eat crackers all day long, if I don't try to cram them in too fast.

So yeah, RNY helps, a lot. I couldn't have kept all this weight off without it. But I could be gaining every day if I didn't find other ways to control my eating.
