I had to sort of experiment with different meditation styles and methods to get something that "worked" for me. We were taught body scanning as part of mindfulness meditation in class (we had a six- or eight-week class at the beginning of the study to learn meditation techniques - as well as yoga poses). I got super bored with body scanning after about the third time through. Even though this wasn't part of our class, I discovered some meditation videos on youtube that featured chimes or Tibetan singing bowls. Those did the trick (there are also lots of videos with things like waterfalls, thunderstorms, birds, etc). For some reason, I drop into meditative stages really quickly when I hear Tibetan singing bowls or chimes - so I use those now. There's now a meditation class over at my yoga studio where the instructor brings all of her gongs and singing bowls and plays them while we meditate. It's fabulous! So anyway, my point is, you might have to experiment a bit before finding something that works for you. If that app (Mindfulness Coach) does it for you, then there you go! But if not, fear not - there may be something else that does the trick for you.

Hi Karen:

I think that crying is pretty helpful in certain situations!

Hi all!

Happy Veterans Day and thank you to everyone who served our country or have family and friends who did. It is a strange holiday since a lot of businesses don't celebrate it (but should IMO).

QOTD: Tough question as I definitely still struggle with the urge to eat. But if I drink a lot or do some type of activity which keeps my mind occupied I can frequently get past it.

2 Years 7 months post-op (maintaining below goal for 23 months)

Always lots of coffee...

B: eggs, cottage cheese and Canadian bacon

L: tuna salad, pickles, and cottage cheese

D: fish tacos (yes I am on a fish kick)

S: homemade cottage cheese

Hi Liz:

I think what you said about keeping occupied when you are under stress to cope is a common theme here. It's a great idea! (That is, as long as the activity I choose to occupy myself with is not eating!)
