Very happy you like your NUT. Nothing better than a Dr that understands you.
And I love your meme, so very true.

Also good to hear your rib is improving a bit!

Happy Fri-Yay all!

I think it's time that we discussed the Western Kentucky Hilltopper.

Like most of you, we watched the East West Shrine Bowl last night. Around the end of the first quarter, the East went back to pass, fumble and strip sack they panned to the player *****covered and then we saw it plastered on his helmet.

Whaaaattt???

So we found the name of the player, looked up his school, Googled Western Kentucky mascot and confirmed it:

I, mean, did nobody tell them:

According to Wikipedia, prior to the 1979 season, Ralph Carey, a Western Kentucky student volunteered to create a mascot for the school's sports teams. He said that he wanted to create something unique that stayed as far away from the stereotype that many have of Kentuckians.

Non-stereotypical, yes. But, you would think that at some point, somebody would have said "Uhm Ralph that's just The Grimace painted Red."

And look, I know that peak Grimace was probably more like 1974. But in 1979, Grimace, Hamburgler and the boys were certainly still part of the American zeitgeist. It wasn't all Studio 54 and the hostage crisis.

Ironically, Western Kentucky is suing an Italian television studio for copyright infringement because they claim that a character featured on the television show Striscia la Notizia was a copy of the WKU mascot.

So, I am going to a Mens church retreat with my friend on Saturday. And I want to say this in very general terms in order to remain cognizant of Wednesday's QOTD, but at no point have I ever looked around the church during a boring sermon and said "I wish the women weren't here."

I went to this event in 2019, so now I know what to expect.

I was raised Catholic. There is a certain cadence that we learn: sit, stand, sit, stand, sit, kneel, stand, walk, long kneel, sit, stand. Then you can go home or to Dunkin Donuts. Amy knows.

The Protestants are completely different. We go into Mass and they sing a song. Okay, no problem. Then they sang a second song. I think that we only sing two songs on Christmas Eve. And one is an Ave Maria.

Imagine my shock when they launched into a third song? I mean are we at Mass or at Van Halen? I don't even know how many songs they did. There may have been encores.

After the first Mass, there are lectures. Those are actually pretty interesting. But. A second Mass in the afternoon? WTF. 2 Masses a year and $20 a week makes you an above average Catholic. Two a day is crazy town. And did I mention no women?

He is a good friend and this is important to him, so I will go. They feed us, but I suspect that Chrissy's inmates eat much better.

Other than hanging with the Evangelicals, my weekend is pretty chill. I knocked a lot off of my list last weekend, but I still have a few things. Would love to get my haircut if time allows.

QOTD: I could do a week of posts on this. But one thing is to set up an account on www.ssa.gov and track what our social security benefits will be.

Breakfast: Egg sandwich

Lunch: Roast Beef

Dinner: salmon tacos

Have a great week, all!

I grew up Episcopalian (Anglican/Church of England), which is about as close to Catholic as you can get without being Catholic. So we had the same sit/stand/kneel/sit/stand/kneel thing going on. It's so weird to me being in an evangelical-type of church because it's like night & day difference (I don't go to one because I'm honestly not very religious and almost never go to church, but I've been to a few evangelical services - in the US it's been mostly weddings and funerals, but when I was volunteering in Africa many years ago, people always wanted to take me to their church. They're all pretty much evangelical there, because most missionaries these days are from evangelical denominations. The music was really good - and there was a ton of it, but the service itself was so different - with people jumping out of their seats and singing and shouting. I was used to people just kind of sitting there quietly - and sitting/standing/kneeling/sitting/standing/kneeling. So different...

You probably aren't surprised that I don't a clue what the Shrine Bowl is. Enjoy the retreat this weekend.

Hockey and Baseball, I know. There was a running back from Fresno State who played very well last night.

Well funny you should mention the No women thing and all the music. I did not mention this but right at the new year our AG (Evangelist church) was expecting us to fast and to be in church 9 times in 8 days. All of the services there start with 30-45 minutes of worship music and 20 minutes of preaching on Tithe. Most services lasted about 2 hours. Also, most events were segregated into men's and women's events. I really was conflicted seeing Ron and I are separated enough all week with work and what not. Before the holiday we went to a baptism for a friend and really liked the church and have been attending there for the last 3 weeks. (The Pastor at the AG church just realized we were not there for 3 weeks and finally reached out) I wanted to tell him I'm going back to catholic church since they have way better wine, but Ron wouldn't let me. It is only about an hour compared to 2 at the other church and it starts at 9 not 8:30 so I can actually get up at my regular wake time instead of waking and hour early on Sunday for church. I never liked the concur and divide mentality of this church. Also, I want to get away from being too involved. Enjoy your retreat.
