You lost 22 pounds in a week? Did you think that was going to continue?

I actually gained 11 pounds in surgery. It took me over a week to get down to my starting point.

I dislike saying this, but your vitamin regimen is really crappy. Flintstones are missing a LOT of things we need. Things you haven't been getting AT ALL. please start complete, ADULT vitamins.

All of the commonly available calcium chews are calcium carbonate or tricalcium phosphate. If that's what you've been taking, you haven't absorbed much of it, at all. And even if those calcium chews were calcium citrate, you should be getting three or more doses a day, not 2.

Almost everyone needs a bunch more B12 and D3 as well, more than you've been getting.

Please, please, get COMPLETE labs run as soon as possible. A complete set of vitamins and minerals is going to be about 15 vials of blood. Yes, 15. If they take less, they aren't checking a lot of things, like vitamin K, copper, selenium, etc. Don't take no for an answer. And don't take their word for it that your levels are ok. Get the printout. You will need it in the future.

You also need a bone density scan. The calcium result in your labwork tells you absolutely nothing about your bone health. Only a very quick and simple bone density, or DEXA scan can do that.

Please follow up on all this. At 11 years out, you can have serious, serious deficiencies, some of which can cause permanent health issues.

There is a good list of labs you can print and give your doc on the following link. Scoll down and look for the posts by Andrea and Vitalady.

There may be a majority of us who have no issues, and wonder if we were put in some control, or placebo group. Then one day we get a little ****y, and eat a little too much, or too fast, and boom -- you'll know for certain you had surgery.

When you feel like you're going to die, remember this post. Maybe it'll make you smile.

Honestly, you have a long way to go, and this isn't the time to start looking for something to replace the kind of crappy snacks that got you and me morbidly obese in the first place. Adding protein to a crappy snack doesn't make it healthy. Use those calories for some dense protein, or just don't use them at all.

A lot of people find those substitute snacks to be a gateway back into Little Debbie and Hershey. You can rethink it in a year from now, if it even interests you then. But for now, you'll be better off staying on the wagon.

I can guarantee that some of the protein powders that people tell you are the best tasting thing ever will taste like total crap to you. Tastes vary so much. And quite often, something that tastes great right now, will taste crappy after surgery.

Your best bet is to get sample packs of a wide variety of powders, so you have them at hand. Don't go buying a big bucket of protein until you're sure.

You can't go too low, and starvation mode is a bunch of malarkey. You're carrying around all the extra calories you need, so you don't have to eat more. What you DO need is protein, since you don't have reserves of that, and vitamins.

A lot of people won't see the scale move at 1200. The number most often seen for those serious about losing what you'd like to is 800 calories.

It's great you are back on the wagon. Good luck.

All the ferrous salts act pretty much the same. Ferrous sulfate won't be any better for you than ferrous fumarate or ferrous gluconate.

The "elemental" part is the portion of the tablet that is the iron you can absorb. For the ferrous salts, there is usually about 65mg of elemental iron in a 325mg tablet. The remaining 260mg of stuff is what makes you so constipated.

On the other hand, a 25mg carbonyl iron tablet is all elemental iron. That's also why the tablets are tiny, next to a 325mg ferrous sulfate tablet, and they aren't constipating.

We absorb ferrous fumarate and the other ferrous salts just fine. The bigger issue is, they all cause pretty bad constipation or stomach upset.

A couple of the other iron formulations don't constipate or upset stomachs. The one that is most commonly available and inexpensive is carbonyl iron. Most use Sundown Perfect Iron brand. The pills are really tiny, and dissolve quickly, and you'll probably need to take at least a few at a time.
