Looking to get back into being involved

I'm 5 1/2 yrs out and have maintained my goal weight give or take 5 lbs either way for over 3 1/2  years.  I used to be very acyive on the boards by being an angel for people with surgery coming up, clothing exchanges, coffee's, moral support via phone email and chat.  I got into a support group when I first moved to the Austin area but soon became an out cast because I don't "follow all the rules" of bypass surgery.... I follow the rules my surgeon had me use and I have had every success possible.  I have had challanges including emergancy surgery for a intestine kink among other things anywho...so I quit the support group because I got discouraged by the attitude of the group.  Now a few years later, I am recently divorced, my oldest is engaged made me a grandma and moved away, my son is graduated and lives with his father and my youngest is now in college.  I am involved with a wonderful man but I still find I have a lot free time on my hands as I am used to constantly being on the go and doing something and I would really like to get back into being active on here.  I live in Round Rock and would really like to find out what groups, clubs or activities are available here now.

Hi, and welcome back to the TMB!

I too found my surgeon's support group to NOT be what I needed especially the further out I got. 

We have a few active posters who live in the Round Rock/Austin area.  And some of our DFW metroplex group have made road trips down for dinner with them in the past.  Our most active member from there is currently in school and hasn't been posting as much as usual because of it,  but I'm sure there are others in your area.  Maybe if you posted a 'anyone else in Round Rock' message you'd get some of the lurkers to come out of the woodwork, LOL

I am sorry that you were shunned by others in your support group.   That is NOT fair at all.   We all have to be there for one another and not put others down.   All surgeon's were NOT created equal but you are a success story !!!!  You may want to check out Nina's OH Support Group.   She lives in Round Rock too.   I believe she named it Round Rock Rocks  ( Rox ) one of the 2 spellings.    It is a OH Support Group so it is probably listed in the Groups list under community.    I wish you lots of luck and I am here if you need support !!! Welcome back to the TMB and OH !!!!

Nina and I started a support group in the Round Rock area. We meet at the Ikea in Round Rock and are a informal group. I understand how a groups attitude can affect you. As I also follow what my surgeon and nutritionist tell me and not what a group tells me  I should be doing. As I had some minor complications after my surgery and it took both my surgeon and nutritionist to get over them.

Jeannie...you have certainly had a lot of success, and it is very encouraging.  Groups can be so difficult.  That is a shame your group was so closed minded, especially because you were following your surgeon's plan for you.  You have also experienced a lot of life changes.  I look forward to reading your posts as you obviously have a lot to offer.  Welcome Back.
