was told no dumping w/sleeve!

I was told by my surgeon that dumping is nonexistent with the sleeve surgery. However, on Easter sunday I had some ice cream cake and suffered terrible stomach cramps and diarrhea. I thought it was just a result of too much food in general. But then last night I had half an ice cream cone with my niece, and same deal, cramps and diarrhea. The only explanation I can think of is dumping syndrome. I know it's not lactose intolerance, I had that initially after the surgery but it went away and now I can handle plain milk with no problems.

Has anyone else experienced dumping with their sleeve?

I don't think it is dumping per say, but I have had the same experience with ice cream as you. I thought if I bought the Carb Watch Ice Cream from Braum's, then I would be ok. I ate a few bites and then moments later.....I was throwing it up and had the worst tummy ache. I do not think it was a problem with lactose intolerance either, because I drink and eat other dairy products with no problems. Maybe it's the heaviness of the ice cream?? Who knows.....all I know is I won't be eating ice cream anytime soon!

Lizzy, ice cream is very rich.  It throws a lot of people into lactose intolerance, where skim milk will not.

You do NOT have "dumping syndrome" with the sleeve.  That is because of two things that make it physically impossible:  1.  You have an intact phylorrus  and 2.  You are not dumping things directly into a portion of the intestines that is not equipped to handle them.

Nobody said that making very poor food choices would not result in problems for you however.  A lot of sleevers do find that, especially for the first few months, eating a large amount of sugar results in gastric distress.

Po*tay*to  Po*tah*to if it walks like a duck and feels like a duck let's call it a duck, lol.  We don't "dump" but our stomach and intestines still might not like certain foods and TELL us...

I am somewhat lactose intolerant. I can have cheese and milk as long as I don't over do it. I CANNOT eat ice cream unless I want diarrhea. I do however have a tabls or 2 now when my tummy is upset from something else, or I want my bowels to move lol.
I have had this since before my surgery, I did not consider it dumping then, and I do not consider it dumping now. Eating any thing high in carbs and or fat now can cause me to feel like **** I choose not to eat those things because I want this tool to work. I also do not like to feel that way.

I have never had any problems with lactose.........EXCEPT..........when I ate ice cream after my sleeve.  I am talking a Dairy Queen soft serve cone....just the ice cream and about 10 licks.

I had cramps......gas.....pains that were like small labour pains...and watery oily explosive stool.......in my mind....DUMPING.

Like a damn dummy.....tried it again a few months later.....same damn thing happened.

Now a year out....I can eat the tiniest of some......like 3 mouthfuls...and I am good.

Ice cream was one of my favorite food groups.....yes GROUPS....lol.....so in retrospect......it is kinda good I can't eat it....it was part of my problem that lead to me being fat!!

I don't know why they don't call it dumping. I've gotten really sick when I have eaten rich foods.

I had some birthday cake frosting once and not only did I get diarrhea, I had cold sweats, my heart was beating really fast , and I was very, very nauseous.

So, it may not be dumping but rich foods with a lot of fat and sugar do make me sick. I can eat one scoop of ice cream, but I tried two once and was in the bathroom all night.

I can eat cheese and yogurt and drink a small amount of milk. If I drank an entire glass of milk, I would have cramps and diarrhea for sure

I have always had a sensitive stomach and it just seems to me that smaller amounts will trigger the same responses I would have had before surgery. Only thing is now milk products of more than about 1/2 cup will make me nauseous now where as before they did not. I can eat up to that amount but NO MORE without consequences!

I read this and thought Lactose Intolerance too. I experienced the same symptoms once after a few drinks of a malt and again after a coffee with milk in it.

When I was on the Atkins diet which is zero carbs high protein diet anytime I would eat carbs or sugars I would have the same experience I think this is the same reason once your body is not use to having sugars it wants to get rid of it right away
