Foamies?

I know from reading these posts that "foamies" are disgusting but what happens and why?

Foamies happen to most of us when we are still learning how to eat with our new sleeve.  What happens is that food gets trapped in the curve of our stomach when we eat too fast, too much or a food we are not ready for yet in our recovery.  It is not pleasant and you learn quickly to adjust your eating to avoid this.  It is saliva that has no taste that keeps coming up.  You also get a stuck feeling in your esophagus.  Not fun.  It can last up to an hour and than it goes away.  If it happens, don't panic, you did not break anything.  Just slow down and measure your food by volume before eating.

For me it is like someone turned on the saliva faucet in my mouth, just suddenly nausea and a drenched mouth, I have to go spit, spit, spit. I've only had it 3 times so far in 7 weeks, once after eating egg beaters, once after eating chicken and forgetting not to drink with meals (took a gulp to wash things down), and once the other day after eating too fast and maybe too much, I'm not sure which. It is definitely a learning process.

What helps.....and I still do this....is to try and eat "wet" food.......I've heard it termed as "food lube"

When eating dense proteins like chicken, beef, pork it helps to have it wet with sauce. Like I always keep Wendy's Chili in the fridge......rarely eat the chili plain...most times I use it as a gravy for chicken or beef. I also use condiments like mayo or ketchup. I also like the pre made soups from Safeway....they have a great Roasted Red Bell Pepper soup that is a great gravy for just about everything.

- Eat slow (go for 20 minutes) and slower towards the end.......and chew...get it real fine.....

- Don't drink with your meal....especially after a dense protein. Your Pyloric Valve will be closed and no where for the liquid to go.....

- Don't eat to much....always eat measured amounts of food that is under your sleeves capacity.

Hope this helps

Wow - thanks for the info.  I do get the whole "wet food" thing and I too have discovered that things go down better that way.  I've been fortunate to not have had this experience yet.  Honestly, my biggest issue is when eating, my stomach kinda rolls and feels like the bubbling/gurgling is coming back up my esophagus. I thought maybe this was what everyone was calling foamies because it does kinda feel like foam coming up.

Yep I had it this weekend for the first time.  Had some scrambled eggs and a teaspoon or two of sf red jello.  I would have called it the pink slimes!  Its a learning process.

You have the same surgery date as I. How's it going for you besides the obvious foamies :).  I am really having trouble still geting in the liquids.  This causing other issues, like sleeplesness and constipation.  Other than that, no foamies or sick feelings.

Foamies...Yuck!  I have had them four times. Once when I ate something I shouldn't have (sausage too early out), once when I ate a piece of chicken that was too dry, once when I took a drink of water too soon after eating and recently...not sure what happened.  I haven't had the foamies since early post-op and for some reason last week I suddenly had them.  I don't know if I drank too much or if it was because my dear hubby had me try on his c-pap machine and I took in too much air or combo of the two but suddenly my mouth filled with saliva and I was standing above the toilet spitting and foaming.  For me it passes quickly.

I've only had the foamies three times.
Biggest lesson learned:   DO NOT try to take a drink of liquid to wash them down.  This is the absolute worse thing you can do!   Just stop, it will pass!
