Low carb RIGHT after surgery?

Can I pull this off?  *I will talk to my nut* :-)

So... I've been strict low carb for about 6 weeks and have lost 40lbs!!!

I am CRAZY carb sensitive and I don't want to have to go back to the way things were before, with cravings and all.

I keep hearing about people eating mashed potatoes and apple sauce and such after surgery... I really son't want to!

Could I do SF protien enhanced jello, protien enhanced soups, plain greek yogurt (flavored with protien powder) shakes, even refried beans (high carb I know, but more "real") and all?

I want to stick with what is working for me and not back slide... kwim?  But I know the sleeve will change so much, maybe I"m worrying for nothing...

I will however eat whatever they tell me to if I have to :-)

Any thoughts or experiences???

I don't see why you couldn't stay away from the mashed potatoes and applesauce. I lived off broths, popsicles, jellos, puddings, and protein drinks the first few weeks.  I only had mashed potatoes a couple times and applesauce just didn't taste good to me.

You eat so little right after surgery that the teaspoon or two of carbs you get with mashed potatoes or applesauce don't really add up to much at that phase.  However you don't HAVE to eat it you can eat other things.  As long as its within your dietary guidlines you eat what you want and don't eat what you either don't like, are allergic to or just plain don't want to eat.  I lived on potato soup, for instance.  It was the only thing that tasted good.  I didn't like the taste of jello or yogurt for the first week or so.  Its good now but sometimes right after surgery your tastes really change in a surprising way.

In a word, YES.  Don't get sucked into mashed potatoes and that kind of stuff.  That kind of stuff has limited nutritional value.  The first month, your job will be to stay hydrated.  After that, protein is your number one priority.  Broth, low-carb protein shakes, sf jello, etc ....  Your list of ideas is perfect.  Go with it.  Best wishes!

My eating program post-op limits carbs to less than 40 grams per day.

Post-op I never ate mashed potato or apple sauce. There would be no way I could eat that and stay on program. Even now that I have been at goal for more than a year I still do not eat potato, rice, pasta or a lot of bread.

Like you I am crazy carb sensitive. I have reached my weight loss goal and maintained because I limit carbs.

I've  read the posts where people eat mashed potato and apple sauce post-op. These are often the same people who will post about stalls and slow weight loss.

Do what works for you and get regular exercise or physical activity and you'll reach your goal.

Good luck,
George

You're looking at things the right way! Be prepared for it before you get there. Very smart! I didn't do mashed potatoes or applesauce after surgery. I did cream soups, egg salad, jello, etc. You're gonna do great!!

Thanks guys!  I thought I probably could, but I wasn't sure.  I;m planning to go ino it like you do with a baby... "an experiment of one" I'll have my plan, but will know that the goal is a healthy me and I'll do what I have to do :-)

I'm glad to know that I'm not crazy for not wanting to eat that kind of stuff!!!

I love it here!
