Well, let me first say that if you're not planning on getting drunk, then why not have a virgin drink? Nobody but you and the bartender will know. I have a virgin Mary (bloody Mary minus the vodka) when we go out. Next let me add that you are really newly sleeved and alcoholic drinks are all carbs, and sugar carbs at that. Do you really want to risk stalling to sip alcohol? Think long and hard on this one! Finally, let me say that if you do drink, you should be very careful. Alcohol will affect your body in a very different way now. You will get drunk faster on a smaller amount of alcohol. I would choose wine instead of a mixed drink and only sip very slowly.
Your doc and nut would advise against this TOTALLY, as would I. You're too new to be thinkin' bout drinkin'!

I would personally wait at least a couple more months to sip a drink. I was at friends and they opened a nice bottle of red. I took a sip (literally a sip of my husbands as it smelled really nice) and it warmed my belly like I had a sip of bourbon! I quickly followed that with some water, but that was a lesson. I think my tum is too raw for any of those shenanigans. I plan to avoid drinking for prob 6 mo or so.. just to take advantage of the early out weight loss.. but not going to put down any adult for their choices.. but 5 weeks, your stomach my get angry at the alcohol.

Hi there!
I waited until 3 months out and it has not affected me any differently than before my VSG. I also have lost the day after drinking every time so I don't think it is slowing me down. But I only drink when I dance and typically dance for at least 4 hours so maybe the workout is why I lose?
Good Luck with whatever you decide

I am almost seven weeks out. Before vsg I could drink like a man. I mean like nine drinks and I was not a sloppy drunk. I waited till I was like five weeks out and I tried a shot of vodka and water at home. Then last weekend I was at the redwings hockey game and I had two draft beers. I got to tell you both times I did not feel a thing. Not even a buzz. Oh and I was having a stall in weight loss and I have been losing like crazy again. So just like everything else with this surgery everyone is different. If you plan on drinking while on vacation try one at home first.

I started drinking around 3-4 weeks post op. Nothing crazy, half a glass of wine or something. Now I can drink like i did pre operatively, but do keep in mind that you are consuming empty calories and factor that into your caloric intake for the day.

I started drinking about 3 months post-op, but I could've started sooner. I just didn't have an opportunity. The nurse at the surgeon's office even told me that, after my post-op complications, I deserved a drink! LOL Yes, drinks have extra calories in them, but I'm a big believer of not being too extreme and enjoying myself as I lose weight. Especially if you're on vacation.
