Question about PPI's

My doctor gave me 60 days worth of omeprazole,  20 mg taken 2 times a day.  I know you can get this stuff over the counter obviously as well.

Is there any issues with taking more than the 2 doses per day? I will take the 2 doses but still find I am having stomach acid issues (I believe thats what is happening as I take omeprazole caps and its nearly instant relief) in between the doses.

I wouldn't think so but it's likely best to check with your doctor.  Also, keep in mind that PPI's can wreak havoc with your B12 levels.  So, if you're not supplementing with a sublingual B12, it's probably not a bad idea.  Good luck!

Oh! Thanks for the warning about the b12. I will be sure to pick some up this week! Emailed my dr this morning so hoping to hear back soon. :)

Maybe omeprazole isn't the right PPI for you.  It didn't work for me.  I now take Nexium.  Talk to your doctor.

You might need a different PPI if the Prilosec isn't working. Make sure you are taking it on an empty stomach, and waiting at least 1 hour before eating anything after taking the PPI. If you take it at night, then make sure you haven't eaten for 2-3 hours. They are extended relief capsules, and if you take them with any food in your system, it can slow down or decrease the efficacy.

Ah I wasn't waiting  an hour or taking them on an empty stomach. gonna see how that goes today.  Thanks for the advice. If anything I will switch meds if this one doesnt seem to be doing it for me.

I agree not to take any more than were prescribed to you. There are so many "acid" medications on the market that you may find better relief with a different formulation or category of drug. I'd wait to hear what your medical team has to say before making any changes.
