I'm Struggling

i have been trudging forward in all the surgery stuff...and i have noticed the last several nights, maybe because school is ending and things are changing, that i have been eating

i have been doing a low carb diet to lose the necessary pre-op diet and lately i have been feeling really really deprived.  because of school and everything being so busy, I had no time to prepare healthy meals or deal with a stressful diet, so i just did this to lose 15 lbs in 3 weeks so that my paperwork can be sent in

so anyway, i am eating low carb when i am picking on stuff at night, but i am am recognizing this a dangerous behavior.

i guess my question is, what happens after the surgery?  you know that feeling when you really want to eat and nothing seems quite as good.  what happens to that feeling after surgery and what do i do to get rid of it now (mind you, that has been the million dollar question for the last 15 years)

thanks for listening

Cristina :)

Hunger post op is NOT the same as pre op.  It is hard to explain..bit it doesn't even come close.  Then when you are hungry...you eat alittle something and are satisfied..I mean really satisfied.  I used to get so hungry preop that I felt sick...shakey, nauseated..that does not happen now.  Yes I do get hungry at times but never so bad like that.  and it doesn't take much for that feeling to go away.  Go forward and think positive..this honestly will be the best thing you ever did..It is for me!

good luck

PBJ is right...and when you are thinking of what you can eat, you simply don't want to put junk in your tummy because it's so small, you don't wanna waste the space that junk takes up. I was a major "I'm hungry, let me go next door to the taco joint and get 6 tacos" when I had the hungries pre surgery. Now I don't even think much about eating something I shouldn't. I don't deprive myself either. It's just the choices I make now are soooo much easier to make the right one. It is so hard to explain. You just have to trust what we say here. It is so different, it's almost like magic.
Hang in there.

My experience is a bit different. I have still had to deal with a desire to eat when I am stressed. The work comes with the knowledge that I am not physically hungry but am faced with "head hunger". I want to eat but I know I am not hungry and I am not physically able to eat large amounts or continuously. Some people do not have hunger like before surgery. I can honestly say I do get hungry, no it is not the same but it is still there. I can also say it doesn't take much to make it go away. I am suprised at how little I eat and yet I am full. It is a good thing. I believe it takes time and work. I admit I am a food addict and food had been my drug of choice for years. Now I must face my problems head on, not with the cushion of food. I will find alternative ways to deal. I must in order to have long range success. I pray a lot. I trust God will help me. I will keep an eye out on this post to see if anyone else has any hints for you. Take care and trust! You can do it.

This is the case for me too. You may find that the head hunger is still there, and the desire to eat is still there, but you can't binge the same.  You will have to find a new way of coping with the stress.  Now I have a lot of strategies I use like taking bubble baths, calling friends, going for a walk, etc.

Your real hunger pangs will be very different, much easier to get full, honestly not very much food tastes great to me anymore, in fact there are two types of food, tolerable and nasty...not very much inbetween.

BUT.  That head hunger does not go away.  I've been struggling with it a bit lately, especially as I've lost so much and I'm actually working to increase my intake for my workouts and to stabilize my weight.  I am conscious of it...it's still not easy to stop listening to, but it's getting easier to recognize and deal with going forward.

I started drinking a low calorie no carb protein drink at night just to deal with the head hunger and give me some fuel to recover from my lunch time workout.  Water is also my friend, crystal light...recognizing the behavior and being aware is step one.  Dealing with it is step two.  Not sure if there's a step 3 or a time when it stops happening.
