They wanna do the leak test on you first - then they'll give you liquids.  Go slow at first and just slowly test your limits!  Good luck!

Hi everyone, and first of all CONGRATULATIONS on your surgery and best wishes for a speedy, uneventful and complete recovery! Two questions regarding this post, how uncomfortable were you after surgery (were you very nauseous and where does it hurt when you try to swallow?),and how do the doctors test for leaks?Congratulations again!

For me, no and no. I wasn't nauseous. I talked to the anesthesiologist before surgery and told her I had trouble waking up and with nausea when I have surgery. Whatever she gave me sure made a difference because I was never nauseous at all. And I was up and walking about 5 hours after I got back to my room.

I didn't have a sore throat either. The sore throat is from the bougie they put down your throat.

I didn't have a leak test. Don't know why.

Also, I didn't have a drain. I think that thing accounts for a lot of the discomfort a lot of people experience.

All in all my surgery and recovery went very well.

I started sleeping on my side about four days post-op (two days after they pulled the drain).  I think it really comes down to whatever is comfortable for you personally.  If it doesn't hurt, then do it.
