lungs
I am 4 days post-op and doing well. Minimnal inscision pain, getting rid of the gas, getting in my protein and fluids. My question is...my lungs hurt!! I am shallow br4eathing. I am not struggling to breathe, but I am not breathing as deeply as before. It hurts when I breathe deep. Or if I intake my air quickly it hurts. Is this normal? I thought it might be due to being intubated, but wasn't sure! Did you guys have this?
Definitely use the spirometer, I did it a few times a day every day over the first week and a half or so... I stopped once I was able to get the marker up to the top.
If they didn't give you one to go home with, call your surgeon and ask how you can get one (perhaps stopping by the ER?).

Yeah, that breathing tool the spirometer is really important to use when you have major abdominal surgery.. We don't breathe as deep because of the pain and muscle soreness and it can lead to pneumonia.
If you did not get sent home with one take deep breaths often, even if it hurts and you may want to practice taking those fast deep breaths through a thin straw to force your lungs to work harder. You won't hurt anything by doing this (other than feeling some pain from the surgery area) but it will help keep your lungs clear. Do it several times an hour!
See if you can get a spirometer though, it makes you exercise your lungs by showing your inhalation rate.
