I am  4 days post-op and doing well.  Minimnal inscision pain, getting rid of the gas, getting in my protein and fluids.  My question is...my lungs hurt!!  I am shallow br4eathing.  I am not struggling to breathe, but I am not breathing as deeply as before.  It hurts when I breathe deep.  Or if I intake my air quickly it hurts.  Is this normal?  I thought it might be due to being intubated, but wasn't sure!  Did you guys have this?

You should probably give your Dr. a call. You would rather be safe then sorry. Pulmonary embolisms do happen so just to be on the safe side.. I have my surgery July 12th and am a little nervous. Did you have a lot of pain after surgery.

Hi Megant,

Congrats on your up coming surgery.  It will be here before u know it!  As far as pain goes, it was not bad at all.  I had the gas pain,, which walking and aheating pad did wonders for!  Other than that, a little soreness, but not bad.

Def. call your doc - better safe then sorry!  And use your spirometer if they gave you one.  I def had major reduced breathing capacity right after surgery - took a week to get back to normal!

Good luck  -  keep us posted!

Definitely use the spirometer, I did it a few times a day every day over the first week and a half or so... I stopped once I was able to get the marker up to the top.

If they didn't give you one to go home with, call your surgeon and ask how you can get one (perhaps stopping by the ER?).

I caught a cold the day I got home and it turned into pneumonia.   I felt like that.

Get checked out.  Any number of things can show up like that.  Hopefully, you are just sore from the surgery, but it's not worth ignoring it.

Hope all is well.

I was sent home with one of those breathing things and it was HARD for me to breath but I kept doing it and soon I was inhaling and exhaling like normal.

Yeah, that breathing tool the spirometer is really important to use when you have major abdominal surgery.. We don't breathe as deep because of the pain and muscle soreness and it can lead to pneumonia.

If you did not get sent home with one take deep breaths often, even if it hurts and you may want to practice taking those fast deep breaths through a thin straw to force your lungs to work harder. You won't hurt anything by doing this (other than feeling some pain from the surgery area) but it will help keep your lungs clear. Do it several times an hour!

See if you can get a spirometer though, it makes you exercise your lungs by showing your inhalation rate.

Hi Sherri,

Since this was few hours ago now - I know you contacted your Dr. right???

I wish I had some advice besides that to offer you.  Instead I will send you good wishes that this passes soon and that you are back to feeling great.  Be patient with yourself too please.

Hugs,

Laura
