The post op ice cream diet - it is soft, right?

I can't believe how many ignorant people I work with. One lady in particular who clearly has no clue about healthy eating, or something.

My work wants to have a "going away" lunch since they are transferring me. I said I didn't want one since I'm not eating solids. Fine, no problem, we can all just hang out. My surgery is a frequent topic of conversation, every one knows. I'm not the first in my office to have it.

This one lady comes up to me, in a room full of people, and asks me what I can eat. I told her I can eat soft food and liquids. So, she suggests an ice cream party. I honestly couldnt believe it for a minute, but everyone stopped talking to listen to this, so I looked at her for a minute, politely smiled and said "no thanks". I THOUGHT my reason would be obvious. "But it's soft and you can eat it". I looked at her again, and said no, I cannot. She had the nerve to keep going and ask "why not - it's soft".

At this point, I was trying to decide whether I wanted to just say "no thanks" one more time or to just let my mouth start going. I split the baby - and just looked at her rudely and said "do you seriously think I just cut myself open and ripped my stomach out  to sit here and eat ice cream?!!!!!".

So then she suggested milk shakes. And them smoothies from Jamba Juice. And then everyone looked at her like she was crazy, and she left the room.

SERIOUSLY!!?? It doesnt bother me all that much but how do people get to be 40+ years old, and be so ignorant and lacking in all ability to read social cues? If you know someone had weight loss surgery, how on earth do you suggest an ice cream party? I just find it odd, because it's not only the surgery issue, but I've been eating healthy for an entire year, and have constantly declined offers to go stuff my face at lunch with them, and have declined their never ending offers for junk.

Good grief.  Don't you just wonder how some folks manage to function on a day to day basis with absolutely NO common sense?

Your answer was a good one.

Similar thing happened to me today.  It's a little embarrassing to deal with, but the good news is you said no!  And I did too.

Lol. Sounds like my mom. Shes always been my rock and my sabotager. She doesnt know anything different than loving her children with food. We just have to stick firmly to our plan and know our health is worth it.
Congrats for not going crazy on her ass. Some people are clueless.

I had something sort of like that at work. When I was on the pre op diet, this lady had it in her head that I was on a "full liquid" diet.  Which in her book means anything that's liquid. She proceeded to lecture about how a full liquid diet is anything that is liquid so of course I coul have ice cream.  There is another girl in my office that had WLS, so she said to her that, yes, in the most general sense of the term you could have that on a full liquid diet, but if you're on a special diet for weight loss or a special diet for any reason for that matter, then certain items would obviously not be allowed.  Well, this person just kept on going and would not waiver from her stance.  Full liquid is full liquid, and if you're on a full liquid, you can have ice cream!
Ok then!
Whatever, I just sat down and ignored her.

I would have just told her it is too full of carbs and fat and calories with not much protein and that you need to eat a high protein low carb diet. If that doesn's convince her nothing will. Way to hold your cool in a tough situation.

Reminds me of a favorite bumper sticker..."I may be fat, but you are stupid...at least I can have WLS!!"

I think I might have one that may just top that.

I have an online friend, who when I told her I was on a liquid diet, actually thought that meant that I was to take solid foods and liquify them in a blender *eye roll*  Honestly, you can't make this **** up.  Talk about ignorant! lol

It baffles me how some people can't put two and two together and take a hint.  I would think that your co-worker would realize that just after having WEIGHT LOSS surgery, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to have something like ice cream or milkshakes (hell, those can be even worse than ice cream).  Congrats for handling the situation so well and sticking to your guns.  I probably wouldn't have been so patient.  Other than my one airhead friend, I haven't really run in to people that stupid.  Many would ask intelligent questions, like "What kinds of things can you have on the liquid diet?"  And I'd tell them.
