Hi

Since things are changing all the time, I was kind of wondering about the experience and
needs of the people who had recent surgeries.

My Questions to you are:

1.)  What would you have wished different?

2.)  Did you have any expectations and found your needs werent met?

Will you please share with me about your experience and your success as well?

Thank you,
Mary

Here's my bitter rant for the night.

I wish I would have gotten rid of my HMO, sucked it up and paid for part of my surgery with a PPO, and had the option to pick my surgeon/bariatric team.

Not that my surgeon isn't great at what he does, but I expected more post-op support, more guidance in the months following surgery, and quite frankly, I expected a team of people who gave a damn about patients. Doesnt make a lot of sense to make me sit through 3 months of classes before surgery and then not provide more than a monthly support group far far away from me.

I guess lesson learned. Get what you pay for - and since I paid nothing, I GET NOTHING. Ive made several phone calls to the supposed bariatric RN coordinator who is supposed to answer our questions/concerns and all of them have gone unanswered.

I expected to lose more weight to, but i'm not all that disappointed. I can live with this part :-p

I really wish I would have spent more time looking for a surgeon who uses a small bougie.  When at my class, I asked, and the Bariatric coordinator stated that he makes his own sleeve using his endoscope.  I read all the time of people not being able to eat more than 1-2 oz, but I can eat 4-6 oz.....and that's is what the doctor wants too.  My last follow up, the PA said 1/2 cup to 3/4 of a cup.  I also feel hungry too.  I didn't have psych eval or NUT since I was self pay, so the hunger is problably just "head" hunger.  My stomach has not growled in hunger since I had my surgery, which is wonderful.  I just wish that I COULDN'T eat so much.  I know this will probably be an issue in the long run (read a lot of Frisco's posts).  But, I'm losing weight, and I can't complain about that.....I'm right up there with everyone else that had their surgery at the same time......

Since you don't have hunger, just try and limit your portions. Just because you can eat 4-6 oz, try not to. But if you are losing, then it's not really a problem. Just be mindful of portion sizes.

Ive found that sometimes my new hunger signals are acid related - are you on a PPI? MIght help, or it might be head hunger. Just a thought.

yes, I take prilosec daily.....

I think it's head hunger....I am very mindful....I cook and weigh everything in 1/2 c. glad containers and freeze it... my freezer is full of eggface recipes and spark recipes (low carb).  I'm very diligent....I know that is why I am where I am with the weight loss.  I tore my meniscus (cartiledge) in my knee 3 weeks ago and haven't been able to walk or do much exercise either.

I was trying 2 prilosec two times a day, then I tried zegrid, pepcid, etc.....went back to prilosec since I didn't notice much of a difference.  I also bought a bottle of gaviscon....I have read several posts about gaviscon on here and it does help some...it's nasty though....I'm just going to fight through it.....I have read that since the nerves in our stomaches were severed that it takes time for that to heal (2-3 months sometimes) and for the signals to carry through right.....Who knows, my brain is like a sponge right now...listening, learning, and trying everything.....I was a self pay and this is GOING to work...

Thanks for the posts

@ Becca

I have this same issue.  I didnt know what a bougie was until after surgery.
Had I have known, I would have made sure mine was smaller than it is.

I eat more than the average sleever.  I also wish I had a bougie like Frisco`s too.
But I hear him say time and time again not to eat until we are full. Eat measured amounts.
So, I figure I can still practice this now, and create new habits.    I do have to admit it is challenging at times.

I totally have this same exact issue!

You'll be fine. As time goes on you will feel less hungry, believe me. And the people who say they can only eat 1-2 oz are IMO either recent surgeries, or not measuring ounces right. Anyone who is only able to eat 1-2 oz at a time 3x- 4x a day on a permenant basis would be in trouble after the excess fat was gone,! There isn't a huge difference in size 32 or 40 bougie either--find pictures and look! If you look up Dr Aceves video on bougie size, you will see that pre surgery stomachs differ so much in size top to bottom anyway, you could have the tiniest bougie and if your stomach is naturally a  'long' shape rather than "wide' , you will still be able to eat more than others.
So far as being able to eat too much--not if you eat the right foods. There is NO reason that being able to eat a cup of food at a time should be an issue, if you choose sensibly. I can generally eat about a half cup at the time, and that's not very many calories woorth of meat, veggies, fruit, etc.
